which Canon cameras have a consistent amount of lag?

->> I'm talking about consistently "laggable" in order to sync multiple cameras with strobes.

Using the equalize function on a Pocket Wizard, the 1D Mark II and IIN are all over the place, sometimes varying by far more than 1/100th of a second. That won't fly with 1/1500th strobe duration, especially when you get the variation multiplied by the # of cameras. The Mark III is a little better but not much. The 5D Mark II is horrible. I thought the Mark II(N) was supposed to be reasonably consistent but mine sure aren't.

I used to use 20Ds and 40Ds and got about 85%-90% success (the delays are different between the two but once you figure out the right numbers you are good). But I "upgraded" to "better" cameras. ;-) My Mark IIs are useless; I get less than 15%.

I still have three original 1D Classics which I never use. I dug out a couple and tested them. The sync/lag was PERFECT! Even without pre-release turned on, they still got almost 50%. And this was with 500th shutter speed.

Is there any other Canon camera that is consistent enough to actually use?

Am I missing something?

->> I would try switching the Mark 2 and Mark 2N's around with different lenses. I have use up to 7 together and it takes a while to get the right combo. I have also needed to close down the DOF preview button. Will you post some of the numbers you are getting for lag times?

->> I really didn't want to have to mess with the rubber band / DOF preview button. I didn't need to on the 40D or 1D Classic. My Nikon friends don't need to either. ;-)

Mark II:

Those are without the lens stopped down. But it looks like you're right, Matthew, thanks. It's within a few thousandths with the lens stopped down. I guess I'll just have to find some good rubber bands. :-)

->> I have used small rubber drain stops or made to fit wooden triangles. Good luck.

->> Not to start a Nikon vs. Canon debate, but we practically have zero issues with the new Nikon cameras. We can go weeks without a single frame lost. In fact, we don't even have to do traditional lags anymore. If we lose frames nowadays it's generally due to strobe or signal issues. Just wanted to share that, depending on what it's worth for you to get 100% on all your remotes and handhelds. This includes the Nikon "pro-sumer" bodies such as the D300 and D700, FYI.

Aloha,
Jordan

->> I don't have first hand experience with this but I have been told that the full frame 1Ds cameras all had a much more consistent lag (or lack thereof) then the regular 1D cameras. That is supposedly true for Mark 1,2,3. Again, I haven't tested this myself.

->> What I've used in the custom functions to get it more reliable:

Shutter/AE lock - ae lock/af
Drive in single shot (no mirror lock-up/whatever)
Verification data turned off
Fresh card
DOF preview button down
Lens in MF mode
JPEG or waiting a few seconds between shots for the card to finish writing if in RAW
