Video editing software recommendations
Chris Peterson, Photographer, Photo Editor

->> OK, so I have this D7000 now and I'm making some pretty cool clips and working toward a larger project.

I need video editing software that will do the following:

Time lapse.

Voiceovers.

Color correction/tonal adjustments.

What should I buy? Do I need Final Cut Pro? Adobe Premiere? Can I get away with iMovie or Final Cut Express? Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

I've done some research on this and read some reviews and my head is throbbing. I'm leaning toward Premiere, but I'd like to spend less money if possible. Though I am willing to bite the bullet, too.

->> Chris,

I love final cut express but I am not sure kit has all the tools you are looking for, if Khoi can afford final cut pro than it is a no brained it is absolutely the best software out there, if not adobe premier which is half the price would definitely fit your needs.

Hope this helps

Shane

->> It depends if you want to go with a full feature software package or a consumer level program. If you need basic cuts and dissolves/wipes and no serious color grading the lower end programs are getting more and more powerful all the time.
I've worked on high end Avid and Final Cut Pro programs and I prefer FCP. It seems more intuitive to me. I know a lot of people swear by Premiere but I've never used it. I have used premiere elements and I absolutely hated it. It was slow and hard to use if you didn't have a huge screen because the buttons etc. were huge. It looks like fisher price editing.
If you want a basic program Final cut express does a lot of what FCP does. If you want something even cheaper sony vegas does a good job for about a hundred bucks. I have heard complaints about some file compatability but have not had any problems personally.

->> I just picked up a D7000 also. So far I'm struggling a bit working in Adobe Premiere Elements. Some of the problems I'm encountering are because of the power of my computer, I'm sure. My personal view is that many of the controls are not very intuitive.

->> Final Cut Express will do pretty much all you want, but maybe not as well as the Pro version. Time lapse and voice overs are straightforward, and the color correction is basic, but it works. The biggest issue you will run into is the limited codecs FCE supports. I don't know what format the video files are coming out of the D7000, but you will likely need to transcode into a different format to edit in FCE.

->> I do a lot of video editing, including working w/ voiceovers, and agree with Peter's comments regarding FCE/FCP. Note that you can get separate programs for transcoding, too, if that's the sticking point for FCE for you.

Can't beat the price for imovie, but the quality of the output suffers. It's OK for working quickly, and easy to learn, but the color correction and tonal adjustments you mentioned are nowhere near professional caliber.

->> If you have money to spend, buy Adobe Creative Suite production bundle. This gets you Premiere and After Effects. After Effects is really useful for timelapse and other post-production chores...
