Recharging NiMHs
Michael Stevens, Photographer

->> I'm not as active a shooter as most of you but I've got several sets of rechargables mainly for powering a Canon power pack for my 550s.

I go through spurts of activity where I'll charge them all and use them all every week or every other week. Then sometimes they'll sit for a month or two, sometimes longer in the summer when there are no triathalons to shoot due to the heat here in AZ.

How long can these things sit before they have lost a substantial amount of power? I'm using all fairly new Powerex 2700s with a Maha smart charger.

Thanks,

Mike

->> NiMH cells lose about 8% of their charge in the first day after charging, then about 1% a day after that. So, being conservative, at the end of a month, they will be at about 50% charge. Probably best to top them off before a job to be on the safe side.

->> which is why so many have switched out to the imedion/eneloop variety. Virtually no loss sitting on the shelf for reasonable periods of time.

->> NiZn are the way to go IMO...ultra-fast recycle times and they hold a charge like the eneloops and other "pre-charged" NiMH cells.

->> I've had good luck with the Sanyo eneloop batteries. Not as much capacity as regular NiMH's but they do hold a charge better.

Here are some interesting comments regarding NiZn batteries over at Strobist.com

As usual, your mileage may vary.
