Explanation of What Was Done...CPS/NPS

->> Over the years I've sent several lens and bodies into Melville (Nikon service location on East coast) for service. I just got back a body that was there for a consistent back focus issue with all lens. At any rate, as I opened the returns I always wonder what they really fixed or what was really wrong.

I'm assuming that the test preformed are logged and results recorded (for purposes of quality control, history of repairs, service tech evaluations, parts management/inventory, etc), but yet we never really find out anything specific. Just a generic repair code (for Nikon that would be a B1, B2, etc.). I'm an inquisitive person and what to have a better understanding of my gear and what causes things to go bad and such. Any have any idea why we did get a checklist or something of what test were preformed, parts that were replaced, overall what was wrong?

I mean when I go in and get my car repaired I get nice concise report of what was wrong and what was fixed. Shouldn't we expect the same from our camera repairs? Thoughts?

->> Randy on the tags I get back there has always been a list of parts replaced and while they don't go into great detail they do list the tests run.

Just pulled two random service tags

Tag #1 says:
ADJ Optical Alignment | RPR Zooming Mechanism | CKD Auto Focus Operation | CKD Resolution Test | CKD VR System | RPR Tripod Ring.

Tag #2:

RPR Reflex Mirror | CKD A-Mode Operation | CKD Exposure | General check & clean | CLN CCD

So at least for NPS all the info has been there in the past. Once in a great while when I don't know what an acronym means I send an email and in a day or 2 get an explanation of what a FCB is.

I'm about to send 2 D3's in for shutters, I'll look at the tags when they get back. Maybe something has changed in the last 6 months.

B1, B2 etc are just billing codes.

->> Eric, I got that information, but I guess I want more detail with these "codes". For my last body that just came back it has: "ADJ Auto Focus Operation". I would like to know what was adjusted (firmware change/mod, sensor was misaligned, contacts cleaned/damaged, etc. The code is usually quite generic. I guess I would would like to see something like:

"Camera focus test completed. Body was found to out of specs with a general backfocus on both zoom lens and primes. Cause of issue was ........... which after adjustment solved the problem. AF system was retested after adjustment and found to be within standard specs."

->> I sent two D3's to NPS last October, I got the same info as Eric did, there was a laundry list of operations, checks and repairs they performed to each body.

->> Asking would be the obvious solution. I just got back a repair from my tech. He had emailed me with the estimate. There was a part replaced that I didn't recognize. Email back an approval with the question regarding the part. Got a response. Done.

The part description is going to be the name of the part that is industry specific. It's not designed to be consumer friendly.

Ask. Simple problem. Simple solution.
