800mm prime

->> does anyone here use an 800mm for sports? IE; football, baseball, soccer? Is it overkill?

I've shot many baseball games with a 400mm, and it just didn't have the reach to full frame home plate at some venues.

Also, does anyone here shoot a Canon MK IV in combination with the 800mm, 5.6 lens? Are night games at HS football fields ok at higher ISO's?

All thoughts are appreciated.

->> In my opinion... I would think an 800/5.6 would be overkill for anything other then shooting the outfielders or shooting homeplate from the outfield.Seem as though a 600/4 would be a better option and adding a 1.4x when needed.I really don't think a 5.6 lens would be something I would want to try and use for night H.S. Football.
I shoot with a 500/4 when I have the light for it and normally go to a 300/2.8 for night games.Even with the 300/2.8 I'm sometimes at 1/500 @ 2.8, and 10,000 ISO under H.S. Football lights.

->> Just out of curiosity, how far away does a person have to be from the camera in order to fill the height of a horisontal frame on a fullframe sensor? 50-60 meters?

->> Scott - a little OT but the only times I've ever used a 1.4x on a Canon 600mm f4 the results were way soft, even in overcast conditions.
Vowed never to try it again.

->> Doug- I have loved using the Canon 800mm 5.6 with the Canon Mark IV for the past year shooting big league baseball. I used it in many situations from bright sun to overcast to night games. Granted- the night game was at a well-lit MLB ballpark. Night games would not be possible at a high school field.

Here is a blog post I wrote a few months ago about using the 800mm lens at a San Francisco Giants game that will give you an idea what I am talking about:

800mm lens + Buster Posey = fun afternoon
http://manginphotography.net/2010/09/800mm-lens-buster-posey-fun-afternoon/

This is not something you can use every day, but it is so much fun to break out every once-in-awhile.

I agree with David.....whenever I used xtndr's, 1.4x or 2x, on my 400mm 2.8, the images were ALWAYS soft and autofocus was pretty useless. Had to manual focus on homeplate from centerfield.
