Craigslist Spamming
Daniel Varnado, Photographer

->> My question is about Craigslist and scams. I recently posted several items to CL to sell. Camera equipment, a stereo, and other miscellaneous items. I’ve gotten the most responses from the camera equipment but they all seem to be spam/scams.

What I’m wondering is what happens when you respond to the person and the email address? Usually the person’s name is different from the name in the email address and it’s not the normal @gmail/yahoo/hotmail etc. Is someone collecting my email address and info to somehow hack more of my info or does it go to a database somewhere so more spam can be sent to my inbox? Is there any danger to responding to these spam replies?

If anyone has had any experience in this I’d love to hear about it. Are there any articles about this?

Thanks,

Daniel

->> Daniel, you could always create "throw-away" email accounts to use when replying to these ads if you're worried about the spam. For example: craigslist1@varnadophoto....com

Use it for a month or a specific set of ads, then delete the account and create a new one. This way any spam coming to it will just be dropped at the server after it is replaced.
