->> For all you Mac users that might have followed the hub-bub about the discontinuation of Firewire and Mac opting to ignore USB 3.0, here is the latest word on Lightpeak.

For the uninitiated, Lightpeak is a superfast connection protocol that replaces Firewire and USB on Intel/Mac computers, important to us Mac users as card readers and external drives are the big things we relied on Firewire to give us fast connections (eSATA users not withstanding) I talked to an Intel engineer last week who had mentioned the fiber optic was being problematic in application, so as this article mentions, copper wire seems to be the bandaid for now. Now we cross our collective fingers to hope that Sandisk, Lexar and all other 3rd parties adopt Lightpeak and not shun it to focus solely on USB 3.0
Speed ratings
Firewire 800 800 MB/s
USB 2.0 up to 480 MB/s
USB 3.0 3.7 Gb/s
LightPeak 10 Gb/s
Wi-Gig 7 Gb/s

| ->> I noticed that on a blog this morning as well sounds great that it is moving along so quickly ... can't wait to see how it will be implemented ... once all fiber, transfer rates of 10 gigabits per second ... sure will make quick work of those 60MP files shot at 20 fps we'll be gathering in a couple of years ... ;-) |
