My First AF100 Test

->> After receiving the camera on Monday and shooting with it for a client, I finally got to simply play around with the Panasonic AF100 today. It has been touted as the "DSLR Killer" by some since it has been developed as a video camera that uses still lenses instead of a still camera that shoots video. It has two channels of audio and imbedded timecode, neither which is incorporated in dslrs. I used primarily the 10.4mm 2.8 Nikon and the 400mm 2.8 Nikon lenses (with a 1.4 tele) with one or two shots with the 80-200 2.8 Nikon:

Like any new tool, the AF100 takes some time getting used to. Things like where the power switch is, where the roll button is, how to change shutter speed quickly, etc. We take so much for granted when using the same cameras day in and day out that they almost become an extension of us. I'm impressed by the camera, especially by the size of the media (sdhc cards) and by the ability to use interchangeable Nikon lenses (or whatever lens you choose.)
The camera sensor can get dirty, just like a dslr, and when I shot the sun a f22, a piece of dust appeared in the frame, just like it would in my digital Nikons. |

| ->> Pretty stunning footage. Did you shoot some hand held stuff? Did you shoot any stills with it? How is the autofocus while shooting? |

->> Most of the stuff was shot on stix but for the last shot. That was done to show folks who wouldn't otherwise know what the hell I was talking about. I have not shot any stills with the camera and will be using it primarily as a video one. The still camera output is only 2 million pixels and small compared to todays standards. I was impressed by the camera's ability to be a video camera first that could take still lenses, not a still camera that could should video. None of my lenses work in autofocus with the camera, I'm not sure if there are ones that do. I purchased it because of its ability to shoot with my Nikon still lenses.
I'm primarily a video shooter at the network level, and have used the camera for three network days since its arrival last week. I've yet to hear back from my clients in regards to the workflow, but can only hope it matches their needs. |
