The printed portfolio. Do you still have one?

->> Wondering how many people still have a printed portfolio. What size is it? Do art directors / buyers ask for it?
Have you switched to only online portfolios or use an ipad or other portable device?
If you use a printed book. How did you design and print it?
Thanks for you input.
Kent

->> I have a 2 printed portfolio books for my fashion/celebrity work, but my sports book is digital based with an ipad that I use just for this purpose. My printed books are 11x14 leather bound with 30 sleeves and all original prints (no tearsheets). Funny thing is, when you add up the cost of a leather portfolio and the cost of custom prints for the inside, the ipad version was a bargain.

->> If I get an iPad, then digital probably.

Personally, I prefer hardcover books. There is just something to a hard copy of a photo that still does it for me and anyone now can have a digital portfolio, so I only reserve them for clients who I can't speak to in person.

->> The only "printed" portfolio I use these days are samples of my portrait, wedding and photo guestbook albums ... except for a few 16x20 display prints in the studio, everything else is digital presentation using a laptop, 15" digital photo frames, iPad or on the website ...

I'm also noticing an increase in requests from clients for the purchase of digital files for facebook, digital frames or personal blogs, etc.

->> Kent, here's a great blog post from PhotoShelter about printed vs iPad portfolios. I know it's not an exact match to what you're looking for, but ss.com member (and super-great guy) Darren Carroll talks a lot about his printed portfolio too.

->> I didn't have a printed folio for almost ten years. Once I got established here in Denver just about every potential client just wanted to look at my folio online. But with my push a two years ago to reach out to new clients which I had to meet in person, gasp!, I put together a printed folio so that they could look at my work during our meeting.

Initially I had a custom book printed and that got a great response but I found that it was very limited and rather expensive. So next I went with a good three post binder so that I could easily tailor the contents to the person that I was meeting with. In my last few runs of editor/AD meetings the commentary on my book was strong so I'm glad that I went through the effort. Especially since in a number of the meetings even though the person I was to sit down with most likely saw my online folio they brought into the meeting additional editors so they could go through my book.

->> 99% of my portfolio is on line - my website but....I update and print a couple of hardcover ibooks every six months or so. I always have one in my car or back pack just in case I have the opportunity to leave it with a potential client. At $30 or $40 it is a total no brainer to give away.

If I am doing a major update I will order 10 or 15 books and have them shipped directly to the studio photo bosses that I deal with. Again $400 or $500 is a minimal expense to keep my name fresh with my bigger clients.

->> I have a printed folio and over the last few months it has been sent around to quite a few potential commercial clients. Definitely seems to have been a hit. I had a book made when one of the most important UK Picture Editors pointed out that he welcomed the screen break that something printed gave him and that he found his team seemed to like viewing hard copy too. I am taking the book to see another potential client tomorrow.

Of course I have a website, a PDF folio to send out and a beautiful Keynote based slideshow on my laptop too. All bases, as you Americans say, are covered.
