Point and Shoots and assignments....
Debra L Rothenberg, Photographer

->> Happy New Year everyone.

Have you ever used a point and shoot for an assignment?
Which one?
What were the circumstances that made you use it? (DSLR broke, in an area where bringing out the DSLR was not a good idea, etc?)
Did the photo get published? Care to share?
Have you ever gone on vacation with only your point and shoot? Which one? Did you regret not bringing your DSLR?

I'll start:
I used a p&s last summer during a Lady Gaga concert. It started to downpour (with no warning) and I was nervous that my D3 was going to get ruined. I pulled out my $60 ebay special-a Kodak Easy Share V1253 and took a few photos (here is one:
http://www.sportsshooter.com/port_popup.html?mem_id=1025&i_id=975832)
A few were published.
Here is one:

->> I've been saying for awhile going to add one to my bag, especially for golf and having a silent shutter. Course here has a great backswing opportunity overlooking the town but never want to take the shot because of the shutter going off, even if it is just high school kids, only time I cover is tournament play and try to stay hidden.

The photo that got me thinking of grabbing one with a silent shutter was a Tiger shot I think, not sure who took it but thought it was a double truck in SI or ESPN? Sure someone here knows who it was and everything. So, I wouldn't mind hearing what features, like a silent shutter, the P&S others may have in their bag as I look to add one. Main reasons for people having it, etc.

The first shot I took after I picked up a G9 a couple of years ago was a piece of wild art published the next day. I've used it to make videos, too. It really has performed well but it does have its limitations. I don't like the shutter lag and the noise above 200 iso. Have you looked at the Leica D-Lux5 in your quest for a p&s?

->> Steven,
I have.
I started this thread as a fun post and to see what others have used their p & s for. I was with a few photographer friends the other day and we started talking about point and shoots and if anyone had anything published using one, and they couldn't believe my Lady Gaga photos (and especially since they were taken with such a limited camera).
I went away for a long weekend in October and it was the first time I ever went away with just a point and shoot (the Canon G11) and it didn't disappoint me. I agree that shutter lag is horrible but other than that, no complaints.

Other than that, I always feel frustrated with the limitations of them on vacation. But you use what you have and the results have been fine.

I'll bet you're thinking of Dave Black, who used a p&s to capture a backswing silently:

->> Happy New Year Debra and everyone else!
I grew tired of lugging around my DSLR on hiking trips as I was hauling a 30 pound pack (clothes, water, food etc...) and found that I only pulled out the camera for really important shots.
One morning I stopped off at my folks' house and picked up my dad's G11 to try it out and it was great!
I wrote about my experiences and posted some sample photos here:

Hope that helps!

->> I know that this thread probably refers to still photo assignments but I've used my Canon sx200 on many TV news stories. It shoots very good HD video and is small enough to get into tight spaces like plane cockpits and cars where it would be difficult to bring a full size video camera. I've also used HD Flip cameras and GoPro Hero cameras which I think technically would be point and shoot cameras.
I've also used point and shoot cameras to shoot stills in situations that I might have brought a DSLR previously.

Today's p&s cameras are getting more and more powerful all the time. While there are certain photos you can't make with a p&s, you can get incredible photos from them especially now with many of them having full manual control as an option.

->> I've used my Canon G series for many assignments, mostly when I didn't want to carry a full bag of 5D Mark II bodies and lenses. I recently got rid of my G 10 & 11 and moved to the Panasonic GF1, which is not exactly a point and shoot but is tiny. I use it all the time. I use it in the same way I used to use my Contax G2 kit back in the day. I used the GF1 for my coverage of the Arizona's governor's race and it worked really well. Very small and discrete.

The Panny lenses (40mm f1.7 and 14mm f2.5) are very sharp and the camera is very responsive. Not 1D series responsive, but for a point & shoot lightning fast.

->> Two times in 2010 I had my G9 with me when I didn't have my DSLRs to capture spot news stories:

Tornado in Boone County, IL (in the last minutes of usable light)

Student protest in Belvidere, IL (w/ auxiliary telephoto lens)

I also used the G9 for an underwater assignment this year because I don't have a DSLR housing:
http://www.sportsshooter.com/curtisclegg/underwater/pages/1.html

High ISO (above 400) is poor and shutter lag is vexing but in a pinch the G9 gets the job done.

->> this entire assignment was shot with my Canon G12. it's about the same in use as the G10/11 but you can run the ISO way up there to 2000 and get great stuff with very low noise. I didn't set out to shoot but a few frames of this for my church, but once we got up there and I saw how sad the kids were from Appalachia, even when they were receiving gifts, I began to shoot for real. All of the video and the stills (b&w and color) are shot with my little black unassuming camera...

http://vimeo.com/17522895

Last, I shot one other assignment with my G12 recently when an art director told me she wanted focus to "start here and end over there." I have all the tilt-shift cameras but I knew I couldn't pull it off for her. I pulled out the G12, set my strobes on slave, and put a pice of paper over the built-in strobe and shot the assignment. the only good thing about having that small a chip in a camera is that EVERYTHING is in focus. She loved the shot....

The assignment was 30 miles out of town, and I pulled up just before sunset, and there was really nice light, so I wasn't about to drive back and get the cards. So I pulled out my point and shoot (a Canon A430) and made enough decent frames to cover my butt.

->> I've said it before in other posts - I have a G10, now G11 with me all the time on all the movies I shoot, even when I have the blimp and a 5dMk11 on my shoulder and a 1DSmk111 on the other shoulder. It's totally silent (very important on movie sets) plus very low key on sensitive scenes ( G11 rotating viewfinder). The main purpose originally was to use it for behind the scenes shots but I'm using it sometimes for key art and it is amazing how many shots from it have made the final publicity hand out cut.

I recently bought one of the new Nikkor 28-300 lenses to use as my 'walk around' and vacation lens. I took it to Monterey on a 3 day trip with the family and loved using it [yes it has it's limitations etc - it is what it is afterall..]. My intent was to then take it to Mexico on our xmas - new year trip with the family.

I started thinking about how convenient it had become to have my D700 and that lens [only] in Monterey.. And got this wild idea about taking it another huge step towards EZ/SIMPLE so i went out and bought a Nikon S8100 coolpix thinking I would take the above + this coolpix for the beach etc.. Well after goofing around with that for a couple days,.......

I left the D700 at home and ONLY took the S8100 on our 2 week Mexico trip. I was sure glad I did that - no regrets. Sure I could have taken some bitchen pix with the D700 etc but really, my 3 year old and wife would not have tolerated waiting around for me to set things up and take my shots etc whereas with the coolpix I could just whip it out of my pocket and blast out some pix...

For Facebook, prints on the wall, emailing to family and friends etc, it worked out as a great solution and the biggest PLUS is that I didn;t have to worry about my big rig nor did I have to lug it around.

* When I was single and also married/pre-kid, I would regularly take a camera backpack with a few lenses, flash, etc etc on trips so I do have a comparo. This was WAY better all the way around.

->> Back when we old guys were all still shooting film I purchased my first digital camera to fill the needs of a PR firm in New York that had Ford Motor Company sponsoring an extreme golf tournament at the 49 North Ski Resort in northern Washington.

The camera was a Canon G2 and the reason they wanted digital was to actually send images to NY immeidately. I have since used the G2 numerous times for publication and personal use.

Actually, No. 7, on my sportshooter page was shot this past summer with my G2.

I am now considering the purchase of the new G12 because the G2 has noise issues and, of course, shutter lag issues that inhibit its use in all but well lit places unless you attach a flash.

With the way digital equipment has come along, I believe that the use of P&S cameras have a genuine place in the publishing world.
