Update your location on your website from your cell phone

->> I have been working on this nifty little free tool that solves a problem many photographers have.
You're away for a job, a vacation, a business meeting but your website stills says your are in your hometown. Photo editors call but you are gone and those that need a shooter in your new location don't know you are there. Pocket-Locator lets you update your website's location info with a click on your cell phone.
My detailed explanation:

or

It's free but donations help pay for expenses. I don't get anything. |

| ->> Burglars also love to know when you are away as well. Several have been burned by facebook updates proclaiming themselves away on vacation only to come back to find they had been victimized. |

Brad and others,
The Facebook problem has an easy fix, set your account to only allow friends to see your page. Then, make sure only friends, family and people you know are your friends, don't accept random FB requests. I have everything set to friends only, even if I comment on a friends status, people that aren't my friend can't see the comment.
It may not be a complete solution but will keep people you don't know from seeing your updates. I know this doesn't fix the website issue but it does solve one problem. |

->> Pat,
That kind of defeats the whole social media networking thing then doesnt it??? Marketing via social media is growing faster than any other sector. So no...sorry, locking everyone out isnt a workable solution. Just watch what you post. Being smart about your Social Media posts in all areas..what you say, how you say it, when you say it...all needs to be taken into account. |

I know the O.P.'s app is slightly different, but Latitude comes built into most smart phones and it's really easy to embed a map of your current location on a web site. It's also easy to disable it when you don't want people to know where you are.
Even if you don't go "public" with your Latitude location information, it's a really useful application if you work in a team setting. Latitude lets you privately share your location with team members. Once that's done, your locations show up on the Google Maps application on your phones. Great if you are working in a large outdoor setting with other team members (golf, auto racing, horse racing, etc.). You can pop up a map and instantly see where everyone is. Also works great if you send a runner to pick something up or if you're waiting for someone to come in from the airport - you can see where they're at instantly. |

->> Brad,
I have a personal FB profile and a Photography profile which is open. I understand what you are saying but I like to keep my personal things personal.
Social media for marketing is extremely powerful but I do understand the fine line and wanting to keep some things private.
I think your app is great, I wasn't knocking it at all. I could see it being a wordpress blog plugin that a photographer could use as well. |

->> Google's Latitude is indeed a neat tool but the Latitude embed widget is pre-formatted with its own design.
Pocket-Locator on the other hand gives you nothing but plain text which means you can format it in ANY way you want to match your website. |

->> If you need more flexibility, you can dig into the Latitude API:

At least as easy as parsing a text file...

->> I tried it and posted it to a private account for family and friends, and it appears to work very well.
You can change it to city instead of an exact address.
Pretty neat. Thanks for sharing. |
