Express Card Reader starts fast then slows down, need help

->> Ok, here is my problem.
I bought a Lexar Express Card Reader, the reader claims to read up to 110mb/sec, I have Lexar 600X or 90mb/sec cards.
When I download a card the reader starts out lightning fast 78mb/sec or more, but after the first say 90 images on the card it gets slower and slower, down to 40mb/sec, then 30mb/sec and even slower sometimes.
I'm trying to figure out why the cards are not reading fast throughout the download, any help would be much appreciated.
Here are the specs on my computer.
Toshiba Satellite A665-S6070
4GB RAM, 1.6 ghz i7 dual core processor, 640 gb hard drive. I'll be happy to provide any other details if someone can help me troubleshoot this so I can download my cards at the peak performance. |

->> Derick I had the same issue on my Vista laptop. I found this online and it was very helpful in speeding things up for me.
....... go in Control Panel > Programs and features > Turn on or turn off Windows features and uncheck "Remote Differential Compression".
Hope it helps, I'll assume that you are running the most current drivers for the reader. |

| ->> How much faster did it make the card read? I'll give it a try, and yes drivers are up to date, I also updated all firmware and drivers that needed updating on the computer, nothing has worked so far, I just ordered a RAM upgrade to 8GB will have that in a few days, but I don't think that is the cause, many people I know use 4GB RAM and their cards download quickly. |

->> I don't remember numbers in terms of speed. I do remember that the speed difference was enough that my first though was "what assMole at Microsoft though it was a good idea to turn that on by default?"
I know nothing about Win 7, sorry. Took too long to get Vista running correctly to want to face moving to 7 and I'm still running XP on my on-site machines and server. |

->> I had a sorta similar problem with a sandisk cardreader. Internet searches also led me to the driver not being recognized by Windows 7, or Sandisk not offering an updated driver supposedly forcing me to buy a newer cardreader. The suggestion was made that if I would reboot my Windows 7 machine with the cardreader loaded, it would recognize the cardreader and download at proper speed.
While a little bit of a pia, it works. At least with Windows 7, my reboot time is less than 90 secs as opposed to over 5 mins with Vista. |

| ->> Nope, I've rebooted the system with the card reader inserted, no change, Eric's suggestion didn't work either. Please keep suggestions coming. Thanks...I'm looking online as well not finding much pertaining to the reader which is Lexar brand and optimized for 600x Lexar cards, I'm using but getting results not nearly to spec. |

->> Is there anyway to "subscribe" to this question/thread?
I'd like to see the various answers and ultimate solution, but won't likely keep checking back to the message board. Or better put, I'll forget to check back. |

| ->> Ok, upgraded RAM to 8GB, system is running better, but transfer speed didn't increase. Still looking for suggestions, trying to avoid calling tech support and spending hours on the phone with someone that doesn't speak English. |

Something like this is perfect for the Equipment Q & A. |

->> Derick,
Does this happen with different ISPs? It sounds like your Internet provider is throttling your usage after a certain amount of data.

->> Mark,
No this is downloading the cards into the computer, not downloading anything online.
I know pretty much nothing will do what the specs say, lol but after taking a 8gb card out of my camera and inserting it download i'll get the first 120 images in the first 15-20 seconds, it will slow down to about 40mb/sec about halfway through then it gets progressively slower, sometimes under 20mb and it will take 10 minutes are more to download the card into my computer. Currently I am getting by with only ingesting my tagged images and waiting til postgame to get the others, but I know others that have their cards downloaded in no time and my reader specs exceed the ability of my cards which are 600x Lexar Professional, and the expresscard is Lexar and according to the box optimized for 600x speed cards.
I'm shooting Saints vs Bucs on Sunday and Sugar Bowl on Tuesday, so I have been trying to figure out what is going on.
My download and upload speeds online are great! The computer works great for that at least!
Happy New Year |

->> Not sure if this is the answer but it may be worth checking out this page :

It appears to be a driver for the same reader.
I regularly update my computers OS but still had to find a driver for a Canon printer so I could use it on my Mac. It could be the same with this reader. The only similar scenario I can think of experiencing is when tethering a mobile phone and a laptop. If the details were not correctly entered so the two could talk then transmissions used to slow in the same way you describe. As you are not entering details then it would appear to be the communication between the reader and the computer is at fault.
If that doesn't solve the problem then I would check the following to isolate the problem.
Does the reader work properly on another computer ? If not are any of the pins inside the reader damaged ? (I haven't tried this reader but in a test Rob Galbraith mentions problems with a reader which had a shallow slot so making sliding cards in without damaging the pins difficult)
Does the port on the computer work properly with another type of equipment ? This may be difficult to test but I think you need to eliminate the port itself as a cause of the problem.
Hopefully by identifying where the actual problem lies it will help you to work out the cause.
FWIW how long it takes others to download a card is probably not a good guide unless you are sure all other factors on your system are identical down to whether they rename on ingest and add a caption. |

| ->> Well your problem is better than mine. I recently purchased this same card reader and it consistently crashes my Macbook Pro when I ingest with Photomechanic. Sent tech support a message but I'll probably just end up returning it. |
