Verizon 4G Data Users?

->> Verizon finally rolled out its 4G data service earlier this month.
Reported speeds are impressive. Anyone out there actually use this yet?
I know the pricing is steep. But if upload speeds are as fast as the company says and it is usable at events it is probably worth it. |

->> I went to the verizon store today inquiring about this. Their 4g service is actually $10 cheaper than what I'm currently paying for the 3g mobile broadband.
The guy didn't mention anything about it not being mac compatible, but I guess I'll have more questions tomorrow when I got to potentially upgrade. |

->> There is no Mac-specific connection software at the moment.
There are workarounds for this. Just do an Internet search on "Verizon 4G data service, Mac connect" and several sites can give you details.
Also, the Verizon 4G service is not everywhere. |

But alas, the Verizon rep wasn't very forthcoming in trying to get something set up for me. |

->> I tried to switch last week, they rang me up and everything before asking if I used a Mac. The lack of Mac compatibility it puzzling. After a huge ordeal trying to refund my credit card they told me to come back in a month or two...
I was excited about paying $10 less per month for faster service. |

->> Verizon's new 4G service has a 5GB (or 10GB for $80) cap... when on either 3G or 4G networks. While their new LTE service may be zippy, you can hit a wall pretty quickly with it.
Their main competitor Sprint's 4G service is Unlimited. No cap, no asterisk other than the usual. Only its 3G service is limited to 5GB before the meter starts ticking.
If you're moving a lot of data, Sprint is the better bet. I've got a Sprint Overdrive (3G/4G) and have been very happy with it. |

->> I've been using it for a week now.
Upload and download speeds are VERY fast. Faster than cable modem uploading it seems.
Big downside, because I'm using the work around with my Mac, it seems to take a few tries to connect at times.
When I am outside of 4G coverage areas, I can't even connect (not even to 3G). So that can be frustrating. |

->> Yeah it's a '08 Macbook Pro. I cant vouch for the Pantech, but the LG is flawless so far. Getting it to work was painless, just downloaded the latest VZ Access Manager from the webpage and then plugged it in.
Even in 3G areas it seems to pick up a stronger signal than my previous modem did. |

->> From what I've read online, the mid-late 08 macbook pro's are indeed 64-bit.
I'd suggest going in and trying the LG modem, just make sure they download the new manager online, and do not use the CD at any point. From what the Verizon salesman told me (who knows if this is accurate or not...) failing to remove the previous verizon manager or running the CD install at any point can complicate the situation.
I mistakenly grabbed my old modem out of my bag and hooked it up earlier today, the 4G was unable to connect at any point after that mistake. Had to remove and reinstall the verizon program. |

->> Larry,
Alright, figured this out, I'm on a 64-bit machine, with a 64-bit OS, but after some checking my comp has defaulted to running on a 32-bit kernal anyway.
Hope this info has helped. |

Thanks again,

I'd hate to get the new comp then loose my ability to transmit. |

->> Pricing isn't that steep. 10 bucks a gig. I used it on my recent assignment to Arkansas. The 3g didn't seem too reliable but I was in Hot Springs, Arkansas so I'm not really that surprised. The 4g was very relaible and speeds were fast, primarily at the airport in Denver and St. Louis. I have the Pantech card which I believe is the better of the two.
I also want to remind anyone that if they have a new MBP (like me) you need to boot it in to the 32 bit kernel (hold 3 and 2 while booting), to use any of the Verizon 4g cards.
Hope this helps, feel free to contact me directly if you have any more questions. |

->> Larry,
I just got a new Macbook Pro and had the same problem as you, the card would not work with the 64bit kernal.
The workaround until Verizon updates the software is to go into terminal and type
sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture i386
This selects the 32-bit kernel for the current startup disk, which was what Apple was doing on all machines until recently anyway. All 64-bit programs still work in this setting. I didn't notice any performance loss after switching from the 64 to 32bit kernal.
Should do the trick until Verizon gets their software in line. |

->> Verizon releases Mac driver for 4G modem
Posted on Feb 1, 2011 12:15 pm
by Dan Moren, Macworld.com
Mac speed demons hoping to hop onto the express train of Verizon’s recently launched 4G network have been held back by a lack of OS X-compatible drivers for the network’s LTE modems—until now.
