->> Very cool article about a photo of LeBron and Wade that AP Photog Morry Gash made. LeBron commented on it and Mr. Gash talked honestly about how it was made.

If you watch the video you can see the sideline photogs about 8 seconds into it.
Gotta love stuff like this!

And this is an amazing photo. |

->> OK, I admit it. I don't see why this is considered such a great shot. To me, Wade is a distraction. His expression is neutral and he doesn't seem to have anything to do with the action behind him. I don't get it.

->> OK, be beholden to your armpit basketball photos and not like it.
This photo is interesting because there is so much going on in it. I would be thrilled with getting it, and I was as happy to see it again on this thread as I was when someone showed it to me a couple weeks ago.
Is it a story telling image? As far as the game goes, probably not. But there are so many story lines you can write in your head. And that is what makes it a great image. It's different, it's fun, it's interesting, it's intriguing. Sure, if you want to get picky, Wade could have had a better expression and could have been an inch or two to the right to fill the frame better. But c'mon.
Mark, you old fuddy duddy, post a link to what you think is a great basketball photo from this season and we can all debate that.
Until that time, nicely done Morry . |

| ->> P.S. Just watched the video. How many photographers got their 300 dropped and picked up their short lens to get this shot? I probably would have still been fumbling around with a neck strap caught on my lens and been blocking other photographers because I hadn't put my 300 down yet. |

->> I disagree about the expression of Wade being neutral.
Without reading the caption the first reaction I had when I saw this was Wade thinking
See ? It's just that easy !
As for you, Dave Harpe :
A big raspberry salute to you, my friend.

| ->> A friend if mine posted this photo/story on FB. I had the same reaction...it's a nice shot but the dude coming out of bounds is a huge distraction.....the main thing I thought was Lebron thought it was great? Glad he plays basketball and isn't a photo editor.... |

->> It's a great photo because it's different.
Wade has a very smug look on his face, and the expression shows how he expects James to do amazing things and doesn't even need to watch.
I tend to favor reaction photos over action photos, especially with basketball because the action photos tend to look the same. |

->> What I'm getting out of this is that the the image appeals to players, überfans and basketball insiders. I'm OK with that, but it demonstrates that some audiences can't be served by generalists. There is at least a niche need for specialty journalists.

->> I'm anything BUT a basketball fan. It's my least-favorite sport to shoot, and I never watch games I'm not paid to photograph.
I like that photo because it's both an action and a reaction photo at the same time. Wade is celebrating before the dunk even happens.
I think part of the popular appeal of the photo is that an urban myth of sorts circulated that it was shot by a fan in the front row with a cameraphone. A friend of mine sent me a link and told me that was the story going around. I countered by saying that the angle of the photo shows the photo was taken very low, and I don't know of any cameraphones or P&S camera that have such a wide lens.
I think the other reason it's popular is that most people seemed to think it was a composite of two images, but then they are impressed to hear it's one image, not manipulated. |

->> That's why I put "of sorts" after that... My point was that it was all over twitter, facebook and message boards and it seemed that most of the people didn't know it was made by a pro.
I understand the criticisms with the photo and why you find Wade to be a distraction.
If it was just a photo of Lebron dunking, it would be very ordinary. That happens all the time.
The other player celebrating (Wade) gives the photo an entirely different element. It tells a story. Instead of just a guy dunking, there's another player show-boating, as if to say "we're awesome, you can't stop us."
If this happened with another any other player combo in the NBA, I wouldn't find it as interesting. |

->> There are two LeBron James photos in this morning's Wall Street Journal''s 2010 Best Sports Photos. One is Morry's. the other Amy Sancetta's Cleveland photo of LeBron's final act.
This from a publication that once hired photographers to shoot photos so an artist could make a black and white line drawing for the paper.
