So ... anybody find an iPad under the tree this year?

->> How many of you received an iPad as a gift this holiday season? ... and what are your initial thoughts on the device?
I purchased one for myself a couple of weeks back and am very pleased ... finding new ways to assist with the day-to-day tasks ... and of course a little entertainment as well. |

->> Got one for my wife who is a teacher and thought it would be a useful tool in the classroom. I opted for the lower end model as it appears that rev 2 will be launched in the first quarter of 2011. This way we can see how well it integrates into our digital lives - and if she decides she cant live without it - or needs more memory and/or 3G - it will be handed down to our kids when we decide to spring for a new, higher end model. We both have iPhones - so I'm not sold on the necessity of 3G - but I'm open minded :-)
Sweet device though - and I love the idea of using it to show prospective clients portfolios - such as fellow SS member Darren Carroll is doing. In case you have not seen it already - Darren and his iPad were recently featured on the Photoshelter blog:

I know a few folks using Credit Card Terminal, for both iPad and iPhone. I think the App is $0.99 for iPhone and $14.99 for iPad.
I know two who tried iPad POS, which is free, neither liked the App |

I was thinking of returning it and getting a MB air it is about $200 more and seems more useful. Thoughts?

->> The amount of storage space really isn't all that important as far as jpegs for portfolio purposes are concerned ... They take up very little space ... Where that space is important, is if you shoot a medium to high volume of RAW files and plan to off load those images to the iPad ... Then you would likely need more space.
I have installed a couple dozen apps, mostly free ant 99 cent stuff, I also don't keep my entire music collection on the iPad ...just a good cross section for background music for slideshows if I feel it adds to the presentation ... Nor do I keep more than a movie or two loaded ... And I still have just over 10 GB of free space available ... This after loading about 300 jpegs for portfolio purposes ... For portraiture, wedding, sports and some commercial work.
After the dust settles on the new version to be released early next year, I'll probably go for more space and 3G ... If it is not saddled into a AT&T only service. With the rumored features (even a dual core 1Ghz processor) that would make it a great road warrior and keep the current model I have for studio use. |

->> Shane, I think the iPad is a huge giant step forward to make my business almost totally paperless.
My current planning is I will be able to do all my wedding, portrait and commercial contracts, having clients sign the contracts, generate invoices, receipts, process credit cards, etc. And email copies directly to the customers.
The apps I have found most useful thus far are:
Portfolio ... For my portfolio presentation
Filterstorm ... For location processing of images on deadline
Pages ... For preparing contracts
Air Display ... Turns your iPad into a second monitor when shooting tethered
Square ... For credit card processing
Quick Voice ... For recording notes or player/coach interviews
I also discovered that my accounting software (AccountEdge) has an app and syncing for records created on the iPad and will be researching that as well.
While the iPad is definitely a great entertainment and leisure device ... With all the great low cost apps available ... It is also a wonderful tool to make the work side of your life more efficient and enjoyable as well ... You are only limited by your imagination as so many app developers are ready, willing and able to listen to ideas and help with solutions ... |

When I first picked it up I opted for the 16gb and after a 4 day trip, I determined that 16 gb was not enough.I exchanged it for the 32 gb which is the perfect size. I also have a Kindle app and use it to keep all my tech manuals as well as my current reading material. I didn't get the 3g as most of the venues I visit have wifi. One of the best apps I installed was dropbox on both computers and the ipad and my iphone, I can load selects to the dropbox app there and it will distrubute the images to the each of my portable devices. The other was Portfolio and a few games. |

My Favorite apps so far are:
Portfolio (for presentation)
Filterstorm (for location deadline image processing, captioning, ftp)
Air Display (to use iPad as second monitor when camera is tethered to laptop)

Screens (VNC app, works great for taking control of a computer remotely)
Shuttersnitch (shooting tethered over WiFi)
LightTrac (Gives, sunrise, sunset and direction of light for any date and time on the planet)
SignMyPad (gather signatures for contracts)
Square (for processing CC transactions)
On the entertainment side:

Netflix
Angry Birds (my son and daughter-in-law gifted me this one)
Madden NFL
Need for Speed Shift
Pinball HD
Scrabble
(the last four I purchased when they were on sale for 99 cents)

How difficult was it to write the app? I am interested in putting one together for the arena football season for the team I am coaching, Utah Blaze.
I would like to add, news, photos, schedule. Something pretty basic, but something we could put ads into, etc...
I am assuming you have to know code? |

->> Shane, you will need the iPad Camera Connection kit.
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC531?mco=MTc4Mjc0Nzc
With it you can either use the SD card reader, or connect your camera directly with a USB cord and download the images. Until the last update of iOs (v4.2.1) we were able to use some third party USB CF card readers, however, the recent update dropped the available USB power to a point where it won't power these readers using the camera connection kit ... so I just connect my camera directly when needed ... so if you read any blog entries that re-date the iOs update indicating you can do the CF card reader ... it's because ... it did work at one time ... hopefully this will be addressed in a future update ... |

->> Hi Mattew
thanks for your question.
developing is not bad if you know object C/cocoa. code is available around the internet, including apple, to help with many of the functions. you can even view online classes at stanford to help. once you have a core done it is easier to add stuff, so you may want to focus on building a core without too many wizzy things at first: our next one may have moving pics (ala Harry Potter) and live blog functions--we didn't have time this time and wanted to navigate the Apple approval processes to understand it.
btw, each version of the OS as well as any new hardware, will introduce more functionality to consider. the latest was print and multi tasking. the new iPads this year will add more as well, possibly things like high res to deal with. all of this is great. but, it can be frustrating to be almost done, and see a new OS version roll in--which means re-downloading the developer kit to test that you still work with the new environment. the latest multitasking update caused many apps to have to be revised and you probably noticed lots of "updates" in the past few weeks due to it.
a trade off for magazine formats is the video size. also, you likely have to run various photo sizes as well (vertical/horizontal and small for text file and large for full screen image display). so compression might be fun. some of the commercial magazines take 10-20 minutes to download--which sucks. everyone was trying to put too much crazy stuff in to show off.
other consideration is pricing. you can run 'free' and depend on iAds for revenue or try to charge upfront. obviously, most of us will download a 'free' app but will think twice about an expensive one. subscription models are forthcoming. the only caveat to the free/iAd model is the current shortage if iAd iPad inventory, which Apple says will improve this year. So don't expect current iAd's for your iPad app to flow like the iPhone apps, or Google ad flow on your websites. the iPad is still very new and the inventory may take awhile. |

->> No ... I haven't jailboken my iPad ... and I don't currently see any advantage worth the effort ... many have and have not suffered any ill effects though.
The problem with jail breaking is if Apple releases an iOs update, it could possibly contain code to remove the jail break and you are back to square one until a new jailbreak code is developed ... and then wait to see if any of the apps you use with the jail break have been updated to work with the new iOs ...
I like to keep things simple ...
Currently the only ability that jaibreaking that would be of interest to me would be the use of tethered WiFi directly from an EyeFi card to the iPad without an AdHoc WiFi network setup ... currently they are developing a an EyeFi card that will do just that without any need to alter anything ... so I'll wait ...

| ->> I used a Jailbroken iPad this weekend at a college basketball game with tremendous success. I mounted a Canon MKIIn behind the rim. The camera was line powered and I used an Eye-Fi Pro X2 card to transmit the images to the iPad. RAW images were stored to the CF card and small JPEG's were stored on the Eye-Fi card. The arena is small, 2000 seats, allowing the Eye-Fi card to transmit the images to the Athletic Directors assistant sitting in the stands approximately 130 feet away. I didn’t experience any disruption in transmission; the entire system performed flawlessly. I also used a PW Plus and two strobes to light the floor. |
