Invision Power Board, anyone?

->> First, let me say I think this site is great. I think Rob does a great job and I think the quality of photography, content and discussion/debate is fantastic.

However, just because something is already great doesn't mean it can't be better. Just look at New Coke ... wait, no, don't look at New Coke ... just look at when McDonald's introduced the Angus burger. Or when someone came up with buffalo chicken pizza. Or when someone developed boneless buffalo wings. Man I'm hungry.

Anyway, in an earlier thread I suggested that people take a look at the Invision Power style bulletin board:

http://community.invisionpower.com/

I belong to other communities that use this and it seems to work well. It allows for people to post pictures and video which makes for more dynamic discussions. And no, I have absolutely no affiliation with them whatsoever.

I dunno if it's of interest. And I'm not trying to start a divisive argument. There's no denying the current setup works just fine. But I think it would be great if people could post images and videos directly into a thread. Just my two cents. Thanks again to everyone for the advice and inspiration and Merry Christmas/Happy Hannukah/Happy Holidays.

You can CHOOSE to ignore something but the chance of not seeing a post that would have been meaningful because it was buried in a sub section of a sub section are nil. Personally I like that we are all paddling in the same pool.

The board is laid out clean and lean. We can already post photos, either as an update to our member page or as separate galleries and link them to our posts if/when we want to add a photo to a discussion. I'll go out on a limb and venture that Bert can think of plenty of things to spend money on OTHER than the increased cost of storage and bandwidth of members u/l'ing their 5d/D3s videos.

With the exception of being able to go back and edit a post I'm hard pressed to think of 'features' that would add to rather than distract from the the board. I've been on those boards that have a dozen sub categories, it's like going through the Sunday paper one section at a time.

You're right Buffalo chicken pizza IS nice..... and every time I go back to my home town, I try to stop at the pizza shop that I grew up on. The only chicken on the menu is 'parm' and if you want to see artichokes on your pizza you best have a photo of an artichoke pizza in you iPhone. Most weekends you will wait dearly for a table.

->> I also love the messageboard as it is, but there is one thing that I am having trouble with and maybe I'm doing something wrong, but here is my issue...

Suppose I search for the following...

"photo mechanic" and actuations

Here are the results I get:
http://bit.ly/e2M2fE

Some of the results near the top don't even have the term actuations in it and it seems pretty hard to get to results that have both of the requisite terms in there. Perhaps the method of searching by quotation doesn't really work here, but it seems that sometimes I have difficulty finding specific terms when using quotations and more often than not, what is returned isn't always the most specific.

Let me be clear, I really like the messageboards and they have helped me immensely over the years, but maybe this could be something that could be improved somehow.

->> I agree that the functionality of this board is like none other, and I too wish we could post images directly in here, but I'm guessing that one of the reasons they do it this way is for security. Many boards are written in PHP and, don't ask me why, but my experience has been that those are targets for hackers. In the two boards I have administered in the past we were forever fighting off hackers and intruders. Having said that, a site like Fred Miranda is one that seems to be well run and has great functionality. Oh well, it is what it is and rant though we may, they aren't going to change it. Requests like this have always fallen on deaf ears.

FYI, I also get weird results when searching.
