->> Now that we're all compiling our top 10 pictures of the year, I thought it would be fun to share our most memorable assignments of 2010.
My 2010 started off with a wicked winter storm that caused blinding whiteouts and massive vehicle pile-ups. One person was killed in a 40-vehicle pileup on Interstate 35 in North Iowa. I remember that debris from the wreckage took months to clean up. It was a pretty gnarly scene.
A few months later I was assigned to shoot the Minnesota Twins home opener at Target Field, the team's new stadium in Minneapolis. I didn't spend a lot of time shooting the actual game, my assignment called for gathering images from every aspect of a home opener.
In June I covered a vintage biplane airshow. The experience of flying in an open cockpit was pretty awesome.
Those are a few of my highlights from 2010. |

| ->> Well i would have to say shooting the INDY 500. A side from the glory of all the celebrities, there is something about the sites and sounds that can motivate you each day you are there. 2011 will mark the final celebration for the centennially era. I cant wait to get back to do it all over again. |

->> Gerry,
Since I'm out of Washington now, I had a blissful year free of assignments of men destroying the planet.
Since I'm in a new city doing the same job for the same company, frankly every assignment that got me out of the office for a day was a favorite.
And there was this little thing called the Olympics, but I had to see the Kahuna nearly daily during it, so that really detracted from the experience -- a lot. |

->> Funny you would start this topic. I am doing a thing on my blog called Twenty Moments where I write about the twenty moments that shaped my year. It is a great topic. If I picked just one assignment though it would be covering the BCS National Championship Game in the Rose Bowl in January. That was definitely a career highlight and kind of a dream assignment for me.
If anyone wants to see my Twenty Moments feature you can go to my blog at http://alittlenewsphoto.com
Have a great Christmas!

Best as in Biggest: Superbowl, Butler in the Men's Final Four, Obama/Biden visiting Indiana. Dalai Lama visiting Indiana. |

->> Working with Justin Homan from Metal Mulisha. Got to know him over the years shooting a few different things for various different publications. My favorite was when we shut off an entire city block in Seattle, set up the take off ramp and landing on the street and had him hit the jump numerous times. Fun to see the public on lookers so shocked and excited to see what was going on.
The shot they ended up using:

Xgames was sorta cool, same with the UO-OSU Civil War. Going to the Philippines to cover and participate in a paintball tournament was a pretty wild experience as well. Excited to see what next year brings!:) |

->> MotoGP at Laguna Seca is always the best, but that's every July. And well, anything at that track.
For work at the paper it was probably a handful of neat portraits including Ron Dias who lives in town and has worked for Disney as an illustrator for over 50 years and painted the backgrounds for the original Snow White in the 50s.
Personally, it was being hired by Bugatti to shoot their world premiere for the Veyron Supersport in August. That was sweet. |

| ->> I'm simple...the smallest events stick out to me this year. The local youth football league photo day is one of the funnest things I do each year; college games in Spring Training nobody else was covering; "owning" Wrigley Field for a day for the All-American game starting the day with portraits and ending with post game celebration, hanging out, etc. type shots with lots of action in between; Phillies media day was a good time seeing guys I've known since rookie ball and what they've accomplished; local MiLB teams season not knowing if it will be the last season so trying to enjoy it a bit more than I have in the past in role as team photographer. The ones that have some meaning to me are the ones that I liked the most, even if it's only locally. |

->> Mine is quite simple. I shot thoroughbred horse trainer Linda Rice for Trainer Magazine. It was actually a tough assignment. She is a great trainer, but also very attractive. In a business dominated by men, I am sure she was worried about how she would be viewed. Hence, she was totally camera-aware. I worked my tail off to make sure there was a solid cover image. It worked out and, personally, I wasn't completely happy with it. In my mind, I wasn't even sure she liked the images they ran.
Fast forward to a few weeks ago when I met with the publisher. I apologized that the images for Linda Rice weren't that great, that I felt I could have done better. His response, "I don't know what you are talking about, they were great. For a comparison, most trainers get an extra three or four copies for their own use. Linda Rice, she bought 20, so what does that tell you."
Suddenly it was my favorite assignment of the year. |

->> This year a writer at the paper and I started working on a long-term project about a family that had twin sons on March 6. Both boys were born with Downs syndrome and have had multiple health problems. As I type this the one twin, Wyatt, was just taken to the hospital with a possible GI blockage.
It's the first project like this that I've been a part of and it's quite a learning experience.
We have started a blog about the project. The first two chapters of the story are up, and a few side bars.

->> I think I carried either a 200-400 or 400 f2.8 close to 500 miles this year, on top of a full pack. Many days were challenging. All of them were worth it. I got to watch a black bear swim right past a moose. Had a couple of close encounters with grizzly bears. Watched a pine marten with a squirrel in its mouth. Had several moose encounters. Saw all sorts of cool birds and painfully waded a small river in bare feet during a snow squall.
But perhaps the most memorable thing were the stars. On clear nights with no moon, there are so many stars in Glacier's skies that you can walk around by starlight. |

->> Best assignment of the year? There were many. The one that sticks out is a 6 month look at how the Milwaukee Police Department deals with the drug trade. The access was unprecedented, as I was allowed total access from the gathering of intelligence, to the use of informants, and finally raids. It's dangerous business for the police as they try to make the streets a safer place.
Best day of the year thats easy. While on assignment in Alaska I took a side trip to photograph brown bears on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula. A bush plane in and a full day of shooting with a guide. No question best day of the year. |

->> I've been a NY Yankee fan since I was in 1st grade. Fast forward 43 years later and I'm a staff shooter for the SWB Yankees in NE PA and when they heard I was heading to Tampa for my 1st ever time at spring training (a 2009 Xmas gift from wifey), they asked me if I'd be interested in shooting a few games for them while I was down there to get the minor leaguers. It didn't take me long to respond to that.
So instead of sitting in the 2nd row right behind the Yankee dugout...I was practically in it. Seeing and chatting with the likes of Yogi, Gossage....Guidry....Nettles....who were the players of my childhood, I was like a kid in a candy shop.....plus a few of today's guys as well.
So this is mine. |

->> For me it came down to a single frame... the one of my wife kissing the top of our first born child's head for the first time, just moments after his birth.
Super Bowl, World Series, Katrina, Haiti, etc... no assignment that I've ever shot can even come close to that moment. |
