->> The Brazilian news agency Agencia Estado has just put up a narrated slide show of their photographers' coverage of the recent police/military action to pacify the Alemão complex of favelas in Rio de Janeiro. The photos are by AE photographers Robson Fernandjes, Fábio Motta and Wilton Júnior. Each provides a narrative to their photos, and while the narrative is in Portuguese, the photos speak for themselves.

For those who didn't follow this story, it was a huge deal in Brazil and is part of concerted campaign to bring the masses of poor in Rio fully back into formal Brazilian society. As always, there are downsides, which the recent film Tropa de Elite II (Elite Force II) apparently addresses -- coming to English-language screens soon?
One of the interesting bits of the narrative is that they talk a bit about working with the police and the military to cover this operation and the extent to which they were given help and assistance. |
