Canon 60D vs. 7D - any thoughts?

->> I'm trying to get my paper to upgrade our photo department with a new camera, and the industry being what it is, extra money is hard to squeeze out of the budget. with a difference in price of around $500, has anyone used both and have any thoughts on them? Also, if anyone knows of any deals floating around out there on the internet for either model, please share.
thanks!

->> Are you going to be using the camera mainly for still assignments, or are you doing a lot of video too? I like the articulated screen on the 60D for video.
There is a pretty good comparison of the two bodies here:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos60D/
Compared to the 50D, the 60D has lost its magnesium alloy frame, ability to use CF cards, and PC plug. The 60D doesn't have the 8 fps of the 7D but I'm thinking it would be a pretty nice upgrade from a 30D.
However I'm like you... I would love to hear from 60D owners or anyone who has used both bodies before I make a decision. |

| ->> I had no idea the 60D had an articulating screen, that's kind of neat. I've always wondered why that hasn't caught on in the DSLR world, seems relatively commonplace with point & shoots these days. |

->> The biggest drawback I see to the 60D is it has 40D AF not 7D AF. I would have called it 50D AF except the 60D lost the 50D's Micro Adjust capability.
I think that's a fairly big deal for stills but not really for video so it depends on your use. |

| ->> thanks for the input, the higher ups opted for the cheapher 60D which i assumed they would, but i seems like it will work well for what we have planned. Its decent enough to shoot sports, so it'll make a nice second body, while the video is really what it will be used for. |

->> I'm reviving Ben's thread from a few months ago because I'd like to hear some real-world reports on the 60D.
I still need to upgrade my 30D, and the video capability and articulated screen of the 60D is tempting me. On paper (and for the price) the 60D sounds like a nice piece of equipment, but it lacks (compared to the 50D):
* about 1 fps
* the ability to use CF cards
* AF micro-adjust capability
* no PC socket
* magnesium alloy frame
A comprehensive comparison is here:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos60D/
These deficiencies and others have gotten me looking at a used 50D instead. On KEH.com a 50D is LN- condition is selling for $999 while a new 60D sells for the same price. This kind of confirms my hunch that the 60D is really a camera more suited to consumers than professionals.
Is anyone using a 60D using it for daily assignments and happy with its performance? |

->> I was not aware they removed micro-adjust from the 60D. That would be a major deal breaker for me. It is the reason I was so eager to ditch the original 5D. I will never again buy a camera that cannot be calibrated to all my lenses (without sending everything off to Irvine).
I still own a 30D that I use for backup... it works for all my lenses at F4 and I have it calibrate to my 70-200 F2.8 but its a major pain not to be able to use all my lenses at wide apertures on that body. |

->> I own a 40D, 7D and 60D.
The 7D and 60D use the newer Canon LP-E6 batteries which last a long time compared to the old batteries which the 50D uses.
If you're shooting mainly stills then the 7D has better autofocus, faster framerate, uses the Canon intervalometer and has better waterproofing (so they say).
I mostly shoot with my 60D since I do a lot of video. It's way easier to shoot with, has the articulating screen so I can aim the screen down and hold the camera high up on a monopod getting high angle photos, can shoot low without me laying down in dirt/mud.
Best thing to do is do what I did. Borrow a 60D from CPS and see if it'll work for you. Also note that although the 60D is kind of their prosumer camera compared to the 7D it still qualifies at a level for CPS membership and service. |

->> Since its been about six weeks since the last post does anyone have anymore input into the 60D v 7D comparison.
Will be buying one soon and figured I could add some glass with the price difference if the 60D is up to the job.
Any input from users would be appreciated. |

->> I should say areas I'm most interested in is low light shooting and focusing speed.
I know there are plenty reviews out there but nothing beats info from people who use it day in day out.

->> Have a buddy that got a 60D not long ago. He quizzed me quite a bit as he was making up his mind since I have the 60D & 7D. He's an engineer with the Keck Observatory so he's used to a lot heavier optics and specialty sensors than us.
Check his blog, being the science type he is he did a noise test the past week, did a bunch of time-lapse exposures at night, astrophotography, etc. He seems pretty happy with his 60D. But then again he isn't shooting NFL football so it's really up to a person if they want to give-up the faster framerates or autofocus of other cameras.
