Me I'm going to be a hand model. I can shoot and model at the same time and rake in the money! |

->> This article refers to "Commercial" Shooters, not Photojournalists. Those rates of $100 an hour are strictly for NY Shooters, with BIG, EXPENSIVE studios...
Back in the mid 80's, when I started shooting in Stamford, CT I had a day rate of $1200 a day, didn't have a single complaint, but those days are gone now, even after specializing, I can't get those rates anymore. Nobody wants to pay them. But I rarely work on a Day Rate anymore. I have found that if I charge by the shot, my client feels more comfortable and I get to make more money!! If I charge by the day, I would be locked into a fee... Now, I have three full sets in my studio, I can work on three different shots at the same time and even multiple clients. Soooo, charging by the shot, I can make more that one shot in one day and make more money!! This can be bad too, I had a very good client, an AD Agency, but their client would take days to approve a single shot, this would tie up one of my sets for days, for a minor job. This situation is what prompted me to have more than one active set in my studio, so this doesn't happen again and I can do something else while I wait for a shot to be approved by the client
FWIW, I have lost clients because they can hire someone to operate a camera and spend hours doing Photoshop for less money. We are not talking about small Mom & Pop operations here, I'm talking major manufacturers, their catalogs and web sites look like crap because they're having someone in their graphics dept do the Photography and Photoshop for hours to get a less disgusting image, instead of hiring someone like me to create a great image that needs little or no Photoshop. Go figure.
I just got a Retainer gig with a Magalog, I have to create a Cover image of a beautiful Girl every month and have extra images to get a full calendar at the end of the year. I also want to reshoot all their product line, for the catalog part of their Magazine. I've been wanting to do this job for almost 20 years, finally, the opportunity presented itself and I jumped on it. It's not big money, but it will be steady income and I still retain my freelance freedom and I still have my other clients, not a bad situation at all.

| ->> I didn't know that tattoo artists were so highly compensated. I'd like to try that. To get started, I'll just do it for the credit. I can be a GWN (Guy With Needle). Who would like to volunteer their arm, back, ankle or some other body part so that I can start practicing? I'll get the best equipment that money can buy and I guarantee that I'll use a fresh needle each time. Volunteers? |

->> Sadly they don't take it to the next level and show the expenses incurred by those playing at the TOP 10% of the scale. I'm still waiting to break out into a full on Snoopy happy dance even at the $100/hr rate.
It's silly stories like this that have kids (and adults making 'career leaps') entering fields with unrealistic expectations. |
