And for those who survived shooting the Bears game yesterday, please share. |

->> Hi Rob,
These really saved me at the Olympics this year--granted it wasn't as cold as it could have been up there--but they sure kept me warm as a first baselayer of sorts:

They were long enough to cover down to my feet which was a bonus, and paired up with the same type core shorts and runners arm warmers, they helped to retain a good amount of heat. That and a couple of Grabbers brand body warmers taped onto my lower back under a bunch more layers worked great for this California boy in the snow! |

->> Being from Australia I can hardly claim to be an expert in cold weather shooting however having shot in -24 Celcius in Churchill, Manitoba - Canada last year and also temperatures from 2 to -7 in Europe the past few weeks , I will pass on a few tips I have picked up or worked out myself.
In Churchill I kept my camera batteries in a soft silver foil lined lunch bag thing designed to keep your lunch warm or cold and I put a hand warmer (one of those air activated thingies) in there too to keep them warm, if I was lucky I would get 30 minutes out of a 1D Mk2 battery in the cold but when heated up it would be full again.
Shooting in Europe currently I have had enough success keeping batteries in a pocket close to my body.
Gloves are obviously a must but thin enough ones on atleast your right hand to allow the changing of camera settings, lenses, batteries and memory cards.
Also remember to take precautions to avoid your camera fogging up when you go inside.
As far as keeping myself warm it has been LAYERS butnot too many. Thermal underwear with jeans and then wind/rain proof pants and thermal singlet and shirt with a thin jumper and then a Kathmandu jacket. Ski mask/balaclava and scarf also essential!
Happy shooting and good luck not freezing! |

Why? It's in the 70's.
Okay. At night it goes down into the 50's. |
