->> I gotta tell you, this is so top notch I can't really apply the proper superlative. It used to be THIS WAY in many walks of life with jobs where there was danger. I can only apply it to my existence as a cop. It used to be that if you were injured on the job, the department you worked for found a home for you, found a way to keep you productive.
Well...those days are over. To often they want to get rid of injured cops, stick them with a medical pension (but end medical benefits) and leave them to fend for themselves.
To see this, in this arena, reminds me there are good people out there committed to doing the right thing, not just what is best for the last line of a balance sheet. It seems to be even more and more rare, but those people do exist. It is good to be reminded of this. |

->> With all the BAD news coming from the newspaper industry the last couple of years, it's nice to hear a sad story like this has a very happy ending.
It's good to know that there is at least one newspaper in this country that cares about it's people first and not the bottom line. |

->> I was in New York with my wife on vacation this past October and I fell in love with the city.
Now I can say "I fell love with the City of New York and the New York Times".
A very big gesture from a very big newspaper.
A class act!
Bravo to the New York Times for doing the right thing. |

->> This is not the first time the NY Times hired a photographer after a serious injury. Many years back Bill Cunningham was in a serious bicycle accident which put him in serious condition. The Times hired him so he'd have insurance and he's been staff ever since.
Bill is not your typical "photojournalist"....he mostly shoots fashion trends on the street for the Style section and is very well known in the world of fashion. http://nyti.ms/eZbKvF He's an older gentleman and tells wonderful stories...until recently he lived in Carnegie Hall for nearly half a century.
I'm really happy to hear João Silva was hired on....he is a stellar photojournalist and deserving of the position.
Bravo NY Times indeed. |

| ->> What great news for Joao and his family!!! It was the right thing for the Times to do. It's just a sad commentary on the era we live in that we are all so shocked that they actually did it. And a tip of the hat to Michelle McNally and all that were involved in making this happen - very well done!!! |

->> "Bill [Cunningham] is not your typical "photojournalist"
Bill is a true gentleman, in the old sense of the world, and can be a hoot and a half if he starts telling you 1/10th of the things he's seen and heard. He ought to write a book but as a gentleman he'd probably ask that it only be published 100 after his death. |
