| ->> A sports reporter at the paper once told me that it's mostly the camera that takes good pictures. I told him that's like me telling him that he wrote a good story, so he must have a good computer. |

->> Try this one out when you're heading out to Christmas dinners...
You're at someone's home, the person cooking the dinner compliments your camera gear saying "Those are really nice cameras, I bet they take great pictures!"
You bite your lip and eat the meal served a hour later. At the end of the meal is your chance to STRIKE BACK!
You turn to the cook and say, "That was a most amazing meal, you must really have some great pots and pans!"
I heard a variation of that several years ago and I've yet to really try it out but would love to someday :-)

| ->> I usually admit, "Actually, it's the lens." It makes me feel good to think that every picture I've taken was the result of my keen and unique photographic eye, but in reality, a good plenty of them are just a halfway decent depth of field. |

->> The equipment you use does have a large effect on the quality of the final images, especially with sports.
Most people are familiar with the blurry or grainy shots that their cameras take at the football game. They see yours, sharp, clean, colorful, well composed, and well timed, and think that most of that work was the camera. Well... the sharpness, lack of noise, and popping colors really are just a product of the equipment used. Even the most well composed and timed action photograph on their $199 point-and-shoot won't be printable.
It's not ALL about the camera obviously, but the photos that they people are drooling over certainly wouldn't be possible with a lesser camera most of the time. |

I always anwer that question and the always present whow thats a big lens... with
"Yeah... It weighs too much..."
Sometimes the conversation continues but on a better stance, and sometimes they look at me with the expression of ... wtf?
Either way it's become my regular answer. |

->> I usually respond "they're nothing more than electronic paint brushes but thank you".
People tend to be drawn to the technology, that's part of it. The other thing which is a growing trend in society is the ongoing tendency to diminish the quality, hard work and expertise that is required to do work. I'm not just talking photography - but across a broad spectrum of society.
People read something on the internet and believe they can do the same thing. Home Depot and Lowes, plus DIY shows on TV make it seem anyone can do anything. The reality is - they can't.
The ironic thing is that YOUR job is somehow special and requires training and experience; it's everyone else's job that anyone can do.
Sorry for the rant. |

->> M. Fischer - I was thinking about it yesterday and realized 2+2=4. I'm going to start an accounting firm. SS members, I'll do your taxes for free to get my foot in the door and exposure.
My standard response to "Wow! That's a really big lens!" - "Clearly, I'm overcompensating for something."
And to "Your camera takes really nice pictures!" - "Yup, I'm just a monkey pushing a button." |

| ->> Here is what I do. I put the camera out of focus then hand them the camera. I say, take some photos. They then ask how to focus the camera. I say I don't know, the camera takes the photos why don't you ask the camera. |

->> Naaaaah!!
I was told by a member of the "Moron Brigade" at DPR that my Product Studio Images didn't show my Photographic abilities because i was using "Perfect Lighting"
HUH???
Like I sprinkled "Perfect Lighting" Pixie dust over my set and it magically became Perfectly lit. That is the kind of characters that you deal with out there!!
