Random Mk III error makes me want to kick a kitten

->> OK:

First -- I'm posting this at 4:00 am (CST) because I have a fussy eight-week-old.

Second -- If you really want to know I how I feel about the aforementioned camera error, click here --

OK then …

Sent my company-issued MkIII in a couple weeks ago for a lockup code. It comes back, behaving fine … or so I think.

Turns out, no matter what I do in the autofocus section of custom preferences, I can't actually seem to change the autofocus point. Or, at least, I can't see.

The usual grid I see is very, very faint. I can tell from the eyepiece display (and the smaller one on the top of the camera) that it's cycling through the autofocus points, but I can't see it.

And, what's more (again, see the link above), I don't think it is. Seems like it's stuck on the wrapping, all-points-on setting.

So, before I send it back to Canon, AGAIN -- and this time with a really nasty note that includes a bad hand-drawing of a severed horse head in Fujito Mitarai's bed -- any ideas if this is some random setting I can turn off?

Thanks in advance,

- gerry -

I'd pass on the yelling, nasty notes, and drawings. I don't think that will get you to the front of the line or get your problem resolved any sooner.

->> Kevin:

I want you to know that I marked your post "Funny" because my paper -- not a small one, mind you -- is a Canon rag and we've had a real bad spate of CPS issues.

Your suggestion, while totally logical, is about the most impractical thing -- at least to my mind -- that I've ever heard.

Thanks, though,

I don't know if they've updated the mark III in a while, but if you go to the Canon site and download it, you should be able to reload the current version on your camera. It might not clear up the problem, but it couldn't hurt.

->> Just a shot in the dark.... Any chance the focus screen isn't seated correctly? That could cause the grid to illuminate dimly. I had it happen on a D2X and 10 seconds later the screen popped out and was flopping around in the mirror box while shooting a burst.

Good suggestion, but doesn't seem to be the case.

Scott:

I'll give that a shot.

This won't help with the camera issue, but could distract you from the problem for a couple minutes. Kind of the flipside to the video you referenced:

Posted with the kindest, most empathetic thoughts, really. Good luck with the focus thing.
