Lightroom Question

->> I have Lightroom 2 and just went and downloaded the newest version (3.3) and it will only work as a trial-will not accept my serial number. You can't upgrade from 2 to 3 without re purchasing a serial number?

->> When you purchased the upgrade you should have gotten a new serial number for it.

->> I haven't purchased the upgrade-I have version 2 which I purchased. I need to purchase version 3.3, or is that upgrade supposed to be free?

->> Debra, that's correct. Major upgrades of Lightroom, e.g., version 2.x to version 3.x, require a purchase of the upgrade (at a discounted upgrade price). Maintenance releases, e.g., from version 3.2 to 3.3, are free upgrades.

->> Jim,
is there somewhere to go to get the discounted price? All I am finding is the full version at full price. I just tested it and it seems opening up and processing the RAW files from the Nikon D7000 look better (less noise) than processing them using CS5 |

->> LR 2.7 to LR 3.3 will require an upgrade purchase for a new s/n. Sometimes Adobe has special pricing on their website, and its worth checking. Otherwise I usually get mine through Amazon to save a few $. Your 3.3 trial version will be good for 30 days so you have time to shop around, and discover if you have any major issues with the upgrade. Beware you can't "go back" from v3 to v2, so keep a backup of your 2.7 catalog if you decide 3.3 isn't worth it.

->> You might look at Amazon or eBay, other retailers might be out there including one of the SS.com sponsors.

->> Look for the "Lightroom 3 Upgrade" software. It lists at $99, Amazon has it for $95. You should just have to enter the serial number of the upgrade purchase into your 3.3 trial version.

->> And yes, the noise reduction in version 3 is really good. I seldom use noise ninja since LR3 came out.

->> thanks Steve and Jim
I actually never used the version 2.7 that I have on my computer so I won't lose anything in the catalog.
Just did a few tests using 3.3 and I like it a lot better than CS5 for RAW with the D7000. Amazing the difference in noise reduction. Seems a little slower, but it could be that I am trying to figure out how to use it properly

->> I recommend you use the trial for a while prior to purchase. Lots of people seem to have performance issues (see the Adobe LR forum), although I am not one of them.
The latest version of ACR in CS5 is the same engine as LR 3.3, so you should be able to get the same noise reduction using PS. But LR has lots of other advantages over a PS/Bridge workflow depending on your needs. |
