What Self-Assigned, Fun Shoots Have You Done Recently?

->> So after a long month of just assignment work, I took advantage of free admission for locals at the Monterey Bay Aquarium to shoot some photos for a blog post for work:
http://mcweekly-photoblog.blogspot.com/2010/12/sunday-at-monterey-bay-aquar...
It was really refreshing being there and shooting with no pre-conceived shot ideas and pure creativity and a camera. The Aquarium always chills me out and I realized I need to do more fun shoots for both work and myself.
So what fun, self-assigned shoots have you all done recently?
Let's see some to just relax with fun images.

->> Experimental abstract time lapse of ice and watercolor paint... MobyGratis soundtrack...
http://vimeo.com/13334247
Shot with an antique 20D and the Canon TC-whatever, and a Reb XTi, with a Promote Control to set the intervals. About 10K total frames shot for this project over 2 days.
I really want to re-render the video now that I've learned a bit more about wandering into the frames in Adobe After Effects...
Hoping for a significant snowfall in the forecast before Christmas to try something else along these lines, too... |

->> Fun thread Nic!
I photographed attendees and exhibitors at Bellingham Comicon earlier last month. I found an empty corner, set up lights and asked as many people as I could to pose for my portrait series. The results are on my member page.

->> @Jack
MobyGratis music is awesome! I've used a track from them before.
Pretty cool that Moby is doing that. It gives him some nice cred.

->> I shoot Laura.
Ah, my kingdom for her presence. (She figures predominantly in my portfolio; more so than is probably wise.) I live only to see to her happiness and contentment.
Then, I shoot basketball. Being as how there is no money in it, I do it for relaxation and pure enjoyment. |

| ->> Randy, thanks for the very kind remarks. I started my blog a couple of years ago, not really knowing what I was going to do with it and where it would go. Both commercial and editorial assignments have been really slow in our area lately, so I decided to look close to home and start documenting the things and people of my rural community. It's begun to take a life of it's own, and the more I shoot, the more I discover, both about my neighbor's and neighborhood, and about my own photography. If you want to be a photographer, you have to shoot and you have to shoot often, and all of this self assignment has kept me going creatively in this sucking economy. |

->> The best thing I have done lately was shoot at a local Help Portrait (www.help-portrait.com)
It was an awesome day, and I love knowing that by giving up a few hours of my time I would help make someone's day a bit brighter. |

->> Finally got a couple snowfalls to create a new time lapse piece I'd been thinking about for a while and mention above wanting to make:

This was a lot of fun... so many battery changes because of all the night frames... I couldn't believe how long the temps lingered below freezing before this fellow finally started to get some serious meltage! |

->> As time permits, I've been continuing my time lapse experiments. I think I finally figured out all the little missteps and hiccups in getting that z-axis zooming going on with full-rez stills in After Effects.
http://vimeo.com/21399367
So, this is 720p video (1280x720 px) shot full resolution on a Reb XTi (3888 x 2592 px), so over the 4,290 frames, each frame creeps a little tighter and tighter in on the giraffe and renders & crops down to 1280x720 px, with the end resolution being a 1:1 crop of the frame at 720p resolution, so it stays sharp, crisp, with that z-axis motion the whole time. This is a test, so I rendered it at lowish quality, and you'll notice some fraggies in the b/g especially when the sun goes behind clouds.
I'm getting really hooked on Time lapse, and man, I wish, I wish, I wish I could do a project like this one: http://vimeo.com/21419634 I feel like I'm in the kiddy pool when I see work like this! |
