| ->> Anyone ever had this? I have 2005 era Mac Powewrbook 15". It keeps going to sleep suddenly. I've set the power controls to prevent it from going to sleep, and it keeps happening. Just wondering if anyone has dealt with this issue and how much it cost to repair. Thanks |

->> Is this constant or occasionally?
What is the state of the battery? Original? Replacement? |

->> Hey John:
Check your power connector, is the LED ring illuminated? If so, what color? Does the LED ever turn itself off when plugged in to the wall?
What does the battery charge indicator on the menubar look like when plugged in? What percentage charged? Does the indicator ever toggle between charging/not charging when plugged in?
Is your battery loose? When disconnected from the power adapter, does shacking the laptop turn it off or make it go to sleep? Have you tried a new battery?
There's three things that would cause this:
1. You are not using a power adapter and the battery is dead or low on charge. The machine is going asleep because it has no power. Replace the battery to check this.
2. You are using a power adapter, but it intermittently disconnects itself because of a bad connection when it plugs into the laptop or somewhere else in the cable. The machine is going to sleep because it looses wall power and the battery power is not sufficient enough to keep it awake. This is common with powerbooks and old batteries. Replace your power adapter, then battery to test this.
3. Your sleep/wake switch is faulty. This switch is trigger by magnets and sometimes goes wonky and needs replacement. You need a repair.
Pricing will depend on the the issue. You may need a power adapter, a battery, or an actual sleep switch repair. Make an appointment at your local genius bar and get a quote, it's free:

Worse case: Your machine is deemed 'vintage' and too old to service
Bad case: Logic board replacement or sleep switch, flat depot-repair cost (usually around $310)
Best case: New battery, power adapter, or fresh Mac OS install. |

->> Chris and George,
Thanks. I'm going to guess sleep/wake switch as the computer no longer actually latches when it closes (and I've tried different batteries, it actually does charge, and the power light on the adapter doesn't go out.) Sadly, I bet it will fall into the vintage category, but hey, so do I! |

| ->> You might be having overheating problems; sometimes fans get clogged up or burn out and that will make the one of the processors overheat and shut down. |
