->> Canon has introduced a hardware upgrade for the 5dMkII and the 7d which allows you to lock down the mode dial! This will be extremely helpful for those of you (like me) who are tired of having a camera set to manual slip into bulb or AV while you are walking!

| ->> $100 for that? And how much does a piece of gaffers tape cost? |

| ->> That's really awesome. Thanks for sharing Tim. I'm with you Daniel for people who only shoot in one mode. But for those who switch back and forth quite a bit, say between manual and aperture priority, the tape thing gets old real quick. |

| ->> I agree. screw that and canon can suck it. $100 ???!!!??? personally I've always considered it a damn design flaw. hadn't thought about taping it down. big THANKS to daniel. I never change from manual on the markII5D so TAPE IT IS!!!! |

| ->> You think that's absurd? Try buying one of those little plastic flash stands for a 580 II flash. You know, the little plastic thingy you slide your flash on to so you can place it upright for IR remote use. 2-cents worth of plastic brought to you by the fine folks at Canon who are always looking for ways to help the professional; A steal at $25!!!! ->> Its interesting that Canon has acknowledged there is a problem by coming out with an "upgrade", but continues to produce 5D MkII and 7D cameras without the "upgrade". From what I understand, the 60D HAS the locking switch, so they did learn something, but they will gladly take your $100 to correct their design deficiency for the older two bodies.
Seems a bit reminiscent of the Canon 1D MkIII autofocus mess.... |

->> I have two 7d cameras and I taped my dial on both down several months ago and it works great. My next step is to tape down the pop-up flash thingy if I can figure a way that wont ruin the mechanics of the camera. I have on occasion bump the button that activates it.
I guess this works for me because I never shoot outside of manual, except the rare times I shoot on bulb. With previous canon cameras I was actually able to disable all the priority modes. Does anyone know of a way to do it on the 7d? |

->> Jim,
I may be imagining this, but I feel like a few years ago I remember seeing (or maybe reading) a solution to your dilemma. It was a little piece of plastic that would go inside of your hot shoe mount to complete the connection to "fool" it into thinking that you have a speedlite mounted thus preventing your built-in from engaging.
It might be something worth looking into.

->> The gaffers' tape has the added benefit of an extra level of sealing the upper left corner of the body about the mode dial.
What's a piece of pro gear that doesn't have some gaffers' tape on it somewhere? |

->> A rep from one of the big manufacturers, who has tons of remote rigging experience, often uses the Solo plastic cups you buy at the grocery store as lens hood extensions to reduce flare on some of his remotes.
His comment was something along the lines of "at the grocery store you can buy 20 of these for $3. Put 'Nikon' or 'Canon' on the side and they are $50 each." |
