HELP! Canon 400 Tripod Collar

->> Yesterday after taking my 400 out of my bag, I put my monopod on and realized that my tripod collar does not rotate as it should. It will rotate approximately 110 degrees starting from the top of my hot shoe and stopping before rotating to the bottom.
Therefore, on top of being sick today, I cannot shoot today's 3 hour football game with a monopod.
Has anyone encountered this issue? If so, what's the fix?
Thanks everyone! |

->> Jared...
If this is the IS version take off the Canon plate. Then you will see the bearings on the ring that turns and rotatates the collar. Check and see if you have any that are not completely screwed in. If so tighten them and you should be good to go. If they are damaged just unscrew an make sure there are no shavings left inside. Right now mine is turning with just 3 bearings screwed in until I can get back to Canon. Good luck..

->> Without reviewing the previous threads on this subject...
From experiences when I was a Canon shooter a while back, do not attempt to use any lubricant in trying to "fix" this problem. It eventully will make it worse.
Talking with CPS when I had this problem, this should be handled by a qualified repair tech.
Spraying WD40 into the collar ---as a notable friend of mine did---only created a slippery mess on the lens barrel.
We have to realize that gear breaks down over time due to use, have design flaws that require maintance (or acceptance) and we just plan bang it around. And it's best in the long run to pay to have it put right by personnel that know (hopefully) how to do it. |

->> Jared,
FWIW, my 400 did exactly the same thing last Sunday while covering a football game. It rotated approx. 120 degrees one direction then stopped, then rotated approx. 120 degrees the other direction and stopped again. I took the cover plate off the collar (per one of the links Bert provided) and found one of the six bearings had come loose and was floating inside the channel that is covered by the plate. Essentially it would allow the collar to turn 120 degrees (the angle between 2 bearings) then it would bind up against the next bearing that was still attached - it would do this +- 60 degrees of where the loose bearing should be attached. I got out my screwdriver and screwed the loose bearing down, and all is well.....for now. I'm sure sooner rather than later I'll have to replace all 6 bearings, but at least the lens rotates inside the collar.
To be safe, or if you're not comfortable opening up your collar (or lack the time, skills or tools), Bert's advice to seek professional repair help is, of course, valid. |
