If it's not paid, are you really "hired?"

->> Yeah, but wait a minute Jack, it also says...
(or, if you'd prefer, we can discuss financial remuneration, though this will depend entirely on experience and profile).
Which means a little negotiation. You just have to be able to write and be able to produce a numnber of interesting articles they would accept for publishing. |

->> So Jack... I see from reading your page that you can write, and you probably have plenty to write about. Why not ask them how much they would be willing to pay for short articles on HDR etc, etc.

->> "Tell us what the first 2 or 3 articles you would like to write would be."
My first article would be to advise people NOT to work for a glorified photo credit.
My second article would be on the thought process of someone who actually thinks the people that run sites like this DON'T get a paycheck....
Of course, since I pulled their pants down in the first two articles there wouldn't be a third. |

Really? No argument people are foolish to accept the job offer. But why is it bad business for them to make it? Let's see - I can throw out a net across the globe and see how many people involved in photography have egos big enough as well as a minimum amount of knowledge and writing ability. Considering how many people post on forums for no pay - either to help others or just because of ego (to DPReview it doesn't matter which) do you really think they'll have trouble getting takers? It's pretty basic business - if I can get something for free, why would I want to pay for it?
If nothing else, articles will prompt debate which gets people on their site and more potential clicks for their customers. And their audience isn't the professional journalist anyway. So while I get why this is bad for anyone who wants a career in journalism and I get why it hurts journalism industry. But if that's not where their revenue is coming from and that's not the market their site is directed at, why exactly is it a bad move on their part?
By the way, I agree with what Chuck's saying. But I'm not seeing why what's good for journalists matters to a site like DPReview? |

->> I also belong to a world wide professional travel writers site and you'd be amazed at how many publications and websites want to pay nothing or very little.
If Amazon purchased DP Review, there is more than enough money to pay professional writers professional fees for their work.
But John is right... there are plenty of amatuer wanna be's out there that will bite. |

| ->> It's the outlook that the entire world has these days........Why buy a cow when you can get the milk for free? It's killing a TON of business for everyone, but as long as someone's willing to "give it away", you can bet there will be more and more expecting it for free. |
