f/1.4 time - Nikon 24mm, 35mm or 85mm?

->> I'm in the market for one of the new Nikon f/1.4 lens offerings and I'd like to apply it mainly to sports action as opposed to walk-around or portrait imagery.
Nikon has a 24mm, 35mm and a new 85mm. It will be used on a D3S body.
I shoot a wide variety of sports both indoor and outdoor (it's basketball/hockey season so I'm gearing up for the indoor world).
I was wondering if anyone has thoughts on what the most "versatile" focal length would be based on your experiences.
Thanks!

->> i have the 24mm. it's incredibly sharp, and generally a great lens -- but, i find it to be too wide in many cases.
if i had to do it over again, i might opt for the 35mm (or i will pray for a 28mm f/1.4 as well). |

->> The 35 is certainly a safer field of view, but I find myself reaching for the 24 most often. I've got Canon versions of each.
You will get a fair amount of 'wow' feedback from the 24, since the combination of wideness and shallow depth of field is something most folks don't see every day, but the clock is running down as more people start to use it.
If you already have a wide angle zoom, you might spring first for the 35, and perhaps pair it with the less expensive 85 1.8. |

| ->> What kind of sports? There aren't that many sports that you can get close enough so that a 24mm is useful especially @ f/1.4. Given that I'd go for the 85mm and it's a supreme portrait lens to boot. |

| ->> I've tried the new 85 AF-S at a couple of volleyball games. The focus tracking/accuracy is very good, but not as fast as other AF-S sports lenses. Much better than the older version (non-AF-S). I'm going to purchase one - I think it will be great for basketball, especially shooting from the baseline corners. The other benefit of the 85 is that it makes a good portrait lens. |
