Canon 60D and SD/SDHC cards

->> I'm way overdue on an upgrade to my 20D/30D combination and I have been waiting for 7D prices to come down a little. Until this morning I wasn't really considering a 60D, mainly because I didn't want to switch to a new battery and memory card.
However, I read the complete 60D review on dpreview this morning and I am just blown away by how much camera you can get for $1000 these days. I would lose out on a couple features that I have now (PC socket, magnesium alloy frame) but I would gain a whole lot more.
My biggest concern is switching to SDHC cards... I have had a bad experience with flimsy construction on them and I'm wondering if they are up to the demands of day-to-day use. Any thoughts? |

->> Not trying to steal your thread here Curtis, but I would like to know why camera manufacturers have switched to the SD/SDHC cards for their consumer cameras.
I agree that the SD cards I have used seem much more flimsy than any CF card I have used.
I would think that the difference in the size of the cards would also make losing an SD card easier than a CF card.
Anyone know why the push to the SD cards? |

->> No worries Bob, I wonder the same thing. Canon has gone to SDHC on the G series, the Rebels, and now the 60D.
The biggest reason, I'd guess, is size. I like the smaller size of the G9 but to be honest I miss the heft of my old G3.
Plus I'm guessing most consumers don't own or use more than one card, and that many of them download their images via a USB cable attached to their camera, negating the need to ever remove the card.
Personally I think it was a bad move for the 60D but the DPR review says that with this body "With the 60D Canon has unashamedly moved the X0D range out of the 'semi pro' bracket and instead focused on the enthusiast photographer looking to upgrade from their Rebel."
I have a SDHC slot in my laptop, which I guess is handy but right now there's an 8 GB card in there that I use only for on-location backup of important images. I have trouble getting the dang thing out because the casing is split along the seam from where I used my thumbnail to eject it. I don't like the idea of having to super glue my storage media! |

->> Curtis I had not thought about the "one card" and "download their images via a USB cable" angle, but it makes sense.
Maybe Justin Kase Condor will stumble upon this thread and give his opinion on the ruggedness of SD cards.

| ->> The funny thins I have lost two cf cards to only one sd card, that sd card was lost at a football game, offered to a friend of mine during the game he refused it, not knowing whose it was, and I never did get it back. |
