200 f/2 lens - calibration or repair?

| ->> After noticing my 200 f/2 focus was a bit off I decided to go through the AF fine tune steps with all my lenses and bodies. Turns out I did have to bias the 200 to about -15 on all three bodies. The other lenses were not too far off zero. I called Nikon support to ask if it's possible that the lens itself needs calibration or repair. Was told to "send it in". He couldn't give me any other info, like if it's even possible to calibrate the lens itself (rather than repair it). So I can either keep using it for now with the rather heavy bias setting on the AF fine tune adjust or go ahead and send it in. Has anyone had a lens needing so much AF fine tune correction? I got the impression that the rep defaulted to the "send it in" answer because he wasn't suer if what I was seeing was within normally expected lens performance. |

->> I have two 1.4x converters that are used on my 200mm f/2L and 600mm f/4L lenses. I sent them in at separate times to have them "collated" to each other. If I mix them up and use the 600mm 1.4 on my 200, I can tell immediately even in the viewfinder. It's a pain to send them in like that but it's worth it as I use both lenses a lot and often with the 1.4. Nikon may offer a similar service to what CPS does for us Canon guys...
Kind of sucks Canon is coming out with new 1.4x's again... means I'll have to pop for another $1K plus all the shipping charges but they work great once they have been matched to the glass...
Hope this helps you man... pat |
