Nikon D1x Focus Error or User Error?
Peter Blake, Photographer
Tokyo | Kanto | Japan | Posted: 12:48 AM on 11.08.10
->> I just bought a D1x to experiment with flash sync; shot a few pix of my kids to check how the AF was doing - 3/4 headon, the kid is running and I put the top AF frame over his eyes, yet the back foot is sharp where the face looks slightly unsharp. I shot 1/800th at F2.8 on the 180, continuous focus.

The lighting was hazy, enough for a shadow on the face, but I wouldn't have called it overcast.

Thanks.

->> As much as I love the 180/2.8, it's not AF-S, do you have access to a long AF-S such as the 80-200 or 70-200?

->> More than likely, the subject was moving faster than the lens could keep up as it was moving towards you. As Steve pointed out, its a screw-driven AF lens rather than one of the AF-S ultrasonic lenses.

So is it User or Camera Error? A little of both.

->> The D1x isn't the fastest 'focus processing' body either, that, combined with the screw drive 180 account for any backfocus. I owned two d1x's and although the CCD files were awesome in terms of color, AF wasn't great on moving subjects, it's circa 2001 technology, almost ten years old.

That said, my shutter in my used (to me) d1x lasted twice as long as the shutter I blew in a brand new d2x.

Thanks - that about confirms it.
