->> It's like working the sideline ... we are photojournalists ... we should never openly support either team engaged in the contest ... either by our actions, our wardrobe ... or the images we capture ...
I've always had the attitude that I get paid the same, no matter who wins or loses. Therefore I should not do anything that would influence the outcome. Those with the responsibility to cover political events should not jeopardize their credibility as well.
Even though Olbermann was more of a commentator/analyst, rather than a dyed in the wool journalist, by making the donations he placed himself in the political arena showing a bias ... which was a clear violation of his contract ... He gave his word by signing the contract that he agreed to such a contingency for employment with NBC ... and thus has no one to blame but himself ... |

->> Tom - I don't like with what he said, he's MSNBC's toned down version of Fox's complete and utter psychopath Glenn Beck, but trying to connect Lecter, come on! He actually used a similar term doing football once and nobody said a darn thing or tried to connect those dots. That's just adding to the fear and hatred, nobody has come close to making the connection you have, most can't make heads or tails of what the hell he meant or was talking about, probably not even him.
So don't leave out the facts...
- The woman was Michelle Malkin.
- Malkin and Fox attacked a teacher for a song about Obama. The teacher knew Obama and wrote a book about his rise from an average person to someone that could change the world, the message she was teaching the kids was a good one in anybody can become anything if they set their mind to it.
- The teacher was getting DEATH THREATS because of the vicious attack by Malkin and Fox News making a nothing story into some conspiracy theory about indoctrination like the Hitler youth (yes, they said that).
- Olbermann made his dumbass remarks in a rant.
- NOBODY, not Malkin/Fox/Olbermann was in the right throughout!
Oh yea, and note how when school children sang about Bush, Fox reported how that's how you support your president even if you don't agree with him! Hypocrisy at it's best.
I agree with the policy, he should have gotten fined. In sports we don't wear team gear covering games (unless of course maybe you work directly for the team, in that case can see wearing it). Personally you won't catch me cheering even though in my head might want one team to win over another. Unbiased is becoming hard to find nowadays...I miss the fairness doctrine! |

->> Nobody has said he's getting canned yet Yamil, suspended and canned is two entirely different things..though it could lead to that and probably will. From the fact he donated to three candidates it sounds like someone didn't read the small print or talk to his agent, not like he was hiding it somehow and having someone else donate the money for him after MSNBC said not to. More like he didn't take the time to read his own contract, an idiotic move.
Really, it does have to do with Fox and other networks because it's ironic that other networks have actual party candidates working for them calling themselves journalists - so it shows MSNBC has at least a little integrity left. You don't see any Democratic presidential candidates with their own show or always on shows as a pundit every day. You see them as guests non-stop, not analysts or hosts. It also has to do with those other networks because when their "newscasters" make donations, or even the owners, then it's just fine. News has become less news worthy over the years because of all these peoples actions, not just one. So you can look at it with blinders on or the big picture, I prefer all the info.
Funny thing is now they pulled back the offer to the guest host because he to made donations when NOT an employee of MSNBC. So now if you ever made a donation to a political party they are saying you can't guest host a show? Guess I'm out, damn, was waiting by the phone for them to call and already had my first weeks worth of worlds worst written up!! |

->> What would you have said if someone at MSNBC had gotten suspended without pay for Donating Money to .......Three Tea party Candidates??
It has nothing to do with Party Affiliations
When ANYONE is hired and there is a Code of conduct and this person BREAKS the code of conduct, the employer is within his rights to terminate the employee!! I have signed such documents before, I know, I read them over and over prior to signing them!! Reading skills are a must in today's employment. I read my document!! He should have too!!
Again, leave Fox out of this!! He works for MSNBC, not Fox!! You can't go to court with Fox does this and Fox does that!! He broke MSNBC's Ethics. At least he didn't put explosives in a F150 Gas tank to make up a story!!

->> First, I'd be shocked because MSNBC is a left leaning channel. Then I'd realize that morning show host Scarborough donated $4,200 to a GOP candidate during the 2006 elections before given the show, which contradicts the channel for not letting the guest host come on because he made contributions. So they allow Scarborough to make donations and hire him but not allow a guest host to come on because he made donations, it makes no sense.
Second, I would have said the same exact thing! It's not about who he donated to, it's about he donated at all. MSNBC suspends people for donating, Fox encourages it, though if they donated to anyone on the left I'm sure they'd be fired! Glenn Beck donated 10K to the Chamber on the air because the left was knocking them for running ads against Democrats with undocumented money. Hannity has a long list of all GOP candidates he gave money to.
NOBODY is saying what he did was right because Fox does it, it's not said once and not sure where the heck you're getting it from. What's compared is the irony and differences among the top "news" organizations - except the part where one person tried to tie two things together that didn't belong. For the love of your blood pressure go have a beer summit with a friend or two!!!
Oh yea, and Anderson Cooper donated money to the GOP to while working for CNN so let's not forget them. His tight black shirt ironically donated to the Democratic party. |

->> Inappropriate
Should be used only when something truly offensive has been said. Something rude, racist, or blatantly disrespectful. This is NOT used to disagree with a person's opinion. To disagree with an opinion you would POST YOUR OPINION as a message. This rating should be hardly ever used, since we can count on one hand how many times in the past year that it could have been used.
Just thought some of you may need that, especially those that seem to hand them out like candy on halloween behind anonymous numbers. |

->> I'm still trying to grasp the reason this is even a story. It's possible I find this "story" silly simply because I spend my days conducting unemployment appeals. but, this seems like little more than attention grabbing gossip.
I'll play devil's advocate and assume there are people who believe KO's an unbiased journalist. But I still have a hard time hurdling the significance of an indefinite suspension for a $2400 political donation. I've seen employers who will fire a 14 year employee and then try to deny their unemployment benefits simply because the employee was 15 minutes late for a 530am cleaning shift...twice in a period of six months. Rules are Rules...
Anyone familiar with KO's sports card collection knows it's one of the most impressive and valuable in the country, and if you follow his eBay ID, spending $2400 is as significant as an average person purchasing a coke at the vending machine. Generally someone who will spend 10-20X that much on a single baseball card, will also find a more appreciable way to exert political influence....or at the very least knows enough to create a flow through subsidiary in order to funnel the proceeds. |

If KO wants to work as a Political Commentator on TV and donate to politicians at the same time, he can do it, at a Network that allows it!!
He can go to Fox or CNN, or even NPR!! But not at NBC, but it is specifically forbidden and he made some big Exec at NPC look like an idiot when he said "Show me if anyone has done that at NBC" OOOPS!! Hint, never make the Uppity Ups that sign your checks look like idiots, they don't like it too much and they tend to fire you for it!!

I'm glad Mike got a chance to rant about Fox, which of course has nothing to do with the story.
Oh wait, let me go do a search for 'FOX' on the text on that story about Olbermann just to be sure.
Nope!
Now I will go watch the video again.
Nope!
So, let me get this straight Mike: You rant about something that has nothing to do with the story (Fox), then get defensive when people mark your post a way you don't like? Hmmmmm.
I agree that an Inappropriate is... well... inappropriate. But certainly you knew your comments would fire up some readers? Dude! Lose the hate!
Personally, I like a rational discussion about politics on TV on both sides. I also choose not to call anyone a nut job, just because I personally don't agree with them.
But hey, that's just me. I guess I am a nut job too then. |

C'mon Mark, the story isn't that KO's employer is upset because of his bias, he's being disciplined for failing to appropriately disguise his bias.
I feel like I'm at the Cajun Dome....Pepsi's the official sponsor, yet Coke products are provided to everybody other than paying patrons, and signs are placed everywhere expressly prohibiting the removal of any of the aforementioned products from designated areas. "I don't normally drink cola, so when the free Coke runs dry, I prefer to buy Pepsi!"
When an employer can hire/fire/suspend an employee for a good reason, a bad reason, or no reason at all (as long as it's not an illegal reason) what makes anybody's suspension newsworthy? |

->> Bradley,
As a former local political manager, if Pallin isn't running, she's got one heck of a tap dance going. She is collecting IOUs by headlining GOP fund raising events all over the country. The ONLY reason I can see why she won't run in 2012 is because she's making millions right now and has a ton of leverage inside the right wing of the GOP.
The buzz inside Washington right now is that Mike Huckabee will get the nomination in 2012 because he'll be the compromise between the establishment GOP and the Tea Party. Not saying I buy that one, but there's a rationale.
In other words, BOTH work for Fox and BOTH are running.
As for Keith; he broke the rules, he's been suspended. He'll do the time for the crime and then be back.
@ Mike: Glenn Beck's a psycho? Nahhh... just someone who gets paid lots of money to stir the pot of 45+ white males... and he does a good job at it, don't you think?

->> Bradley - Palin, Huckaby, Newt have all been thrown into the ring for 2012 and have yet to denounce it. They are always on the GOP list of candidates for President in the next election at all GOP functions when they do polls. Former candidate would be someone like Scarborough & Buchanan that seem to be out of politics for good as they were GOP politicians before entering media.
--------------------------------------------------
Yamil, let me break this down one by one.
"You keep repeating the same thing.. Fox Does it, CNN Does it, Anderson Cooper Does it!!"
You keep ignoring the same thing. Do I say anywhere that it makes it right? NO, I do not!! I think it all stinks and they should all be suspended, fired, fined, etc. because it does not belong in supposed media. By keeping the blinders on and only attacking Olberman it does no good, you are not even looking at the big picture. This whole story is all about the integrity of media, not about just Olberman, that's how I'm looking at it, the OVERALL picture.
"If KO wants to work as a Political Commentator on TV and donate to politicians at the same time, he can do it, at a Network that allows it!!"
He can't, don't you remember he was fired by Fox?! I'm not in no way even a big supporter of Keith as you keep trying to make it out to be when it's just not true. The simple fact is it should not be allowed in media at all - period - none - zilch - zero!!! That's the BIG PICTURE!!
"MSNBC President Phil Griffin told The New York Times last month, “Show me an example of us fundraising.” Oops."
Yea, he said that a month ago and has egg on his face. What did he do, take ACTION. To totally IGNORE the big picture is absolutely asinine. Do you honestly think it's OK for anyone to give donations to a party when you're supposedly reporting the political news in an unbiased manner? I think that is INSANE!!! Media is not supposed to do this, if you were hired by someone to shoot a football game in an unbiased manner and showed up wearing one teams jersey and hat, screaming for them to win, only shot good images of them, you'd be fired immediately! Bias does not belong in media, that's the story here, not that Olberman broke a rule, it's the fact that media - the one that is telling people the NEWS and TEACHING them about what is happening in the world - is taking sides presenting only one side.
Lastly, funny how your inappropriate comments were at 40 and now 43, I got 2 and Jim got one from you. Nicely done.
--------------------------------------------------------
Bryan, really - it has nothing to do with the integrity of media?
I'm talking about the integrity of media, not that one newscaster got busted for something that seems to be accepted at other networks but his does not. I don't think ANY network should allow it, not Fox, not MSNBC, not CNN, not the local channel, nobody. You work in media your job is to report the news as is in reality, not make things up or put a spin on it because you lean that way. You and Yamil are trying to make it sound like I approve of it because others have done it, not even close to the truth in any matter!
As for your search, you do need to re-do it because several articles come up talking about the INTEGRITY of media and how Olberman gets suspended while others are allowed to do it. Again, that's the story to me, not KO, it's all about what media should not be allowed to do.
As for telling me to lose the hate, you're trying to make it sound like I have any. Can you please quote me on one hateful thing I've said to Yamil or anyone disagreeing with me? Can you please show some video tape of me posting this all angry and mad? Can you also please show me where I called anyone a nutjob? You're just adding to it by making things up and putting your spin on it.
Worst part is you're both just assuming who I'm affiliated with, what party and trying to make it sound like I think it's OK since others do it. In no way am I taking a side, it's all about the integrity of media, not about one newscaster, I'm not saying he's in the right because others do it! I'm saying he's wrong and so is everyone else who does it in media, it's about the big picture and where our media is, about there is no unbiased reporting anymore.
-------------------------------------------------
Michael - you bring rationale, I missed it. I think what he says is pscyho, who he is and why he does it is brilliant. This man has contradicted everything he's ever said and does it for a paycheck. He's doing his job of spreading fake fear, he knows it and uses it brilliantly. I should have been more clear in saying what he says is pscyhotic, not that he's a psycho. |

Argue the semantics all you want, but the fact remains Fox News doesn't employ anyone who's OFFICIALLY running for office. Chris Wallace of Fox News Sunday has said that if Palin announces she's running for president, she would be dropped from the Fox News payroll. He even said he would not be so softball with her in interviews like he is now if she announced her candidacy ans wasn't on the Fox News payroll, though I'll believe it when I see it. |

Seriously, how many times before it gets through that thick rightwing skull? It's people like you that is the reason I left the GOP and now am Independent; left went center, center went right, and right went off to a padded room. Sorry but you are just plain out wrong trying to make it sound like I support MSNBC and think it's right for them to do things because other networks get away with it. Yet, as has been said at least six times, I think every organization is wrong and needs a kick in the a$$ with re-establishing the fairness doctrine to anyone who calls themselves news networks. Do you get it yet? Do you get that I do not support any and all lying in news? How many times does this have to be said, they are ALL IN THE WRONG!!! You can keep lying all you want trying to make it sound like I support KO, MSNBC, NPR, whoever, but in the end you're just making it up and trying to lie your way to back your Fox love. Fact is it's not an isolated incident as you want it to be and has an affect on all media!!
Since you brought up the explosives in the truck story that was fake, what happened to those people? Fired right? OK, let's be fair and look at the other network you follow like a lemming...what happened when they used footage from rallies saying it was a different rally to make it look bigger? What happened when they had producers trying to get crowds going instead of reporting it as is? What happened when they come out blatantly lying about everything and anything? Who got fired, anyone? How about their proven fake outrage at ACORN? How about the woman who got fired this year when they kept running and attacking her for racist comments when she was in fat talking against racism? Can you come up with any employees fired for lying in the news, name one please, I can't find ANY fired for this.
Bradly, name another network that has any possible candidates on the payroll. I can only think of a few honest real shots at running and they are all in office still or employed at Fox, that's it. I'm the same way and saw that interview on The Daily Show, believe it when I see it as well. |

->> Mike, naming another network that has possible candidates is irrelevant. "Possible" candidate and "actual" candidate are (albeit slightly) different things.
I'm not defending Fox News in any way. I think it's pretty obvious they're employing Palin and Huckabee with the specific goal of helping them deliver their message, and simply dropping them from their payroll if/when they announce their candidacy won't really help Fox from a credibility standpoint. Fox will just find other ways to deliver the message of their preferred candidate (Palin to O'Donnell: "Speak through Fox News")
All I'm saying is that Fox doesn't currently employ people who have officially announced their candidacy for office, but the fact that they employ individuals who very likely will be Republican candidates certainly doesn't help their credibility.
Of course, people who watch Fox News and MSNBC aren't doing so because they're seeking out fair and unbiased news. They want to hear information filtered through a partisan mouthpiece so it comes out in line with their personal views, and they want that "news" to be entertaining at the same time. |

Guess what?? My Dad defended this country in WWII, without being an American Citizen so I would have the right to speak up my mind without being called "racist remarks, hateful speech, and blatantly disrespectful talk." BECAUSE IT ISN'T!!
OTOH, you calling me, a Hispanic American, a Recist makes YOU a REAL RACIST!! |

->> Yamil,
You honestly have no clue what Janes is saying. He's not being racist nor is he saying your being racist.
He's pointing out that you don't know what the word inappropriate means for this here message board.
You need to relax and READ what is being said fully then maybe you will understand others peoples points before you fly off the handle.
I'll take my inappropriate rating now.

->> Congratulations Yamil, you just earned my first ever inappropriate rating.
I never even came close to calling you a racist, that comment you took out of context is from the definitions of why you use an inappropriate, it was not calling you one by any stretch, where you get this stuff or how you try to connect things that do not belong is unbelievable! For God sake it was describing MY COMMENT and how it did not have any of that in there, not yours at all in the first place. You really need to actually read the comments, and you actually have to look at some facts yourself.
BTW, do I need to list my race, what religion I am or am not, what my father did to try and make a point? You're just completely going off the handle. The original discussion is about ethics and integrity of media to me - not about just KO, GB, whoever - the media as a whole and not your family history. Should I steal a page from Fox and call it reverse racism, hell no that'd be wrong!

I disagree, but in any case, any member can post ONLY ONE inappropriate reply, when you get more than one, it generally means that more that one person STRONGLY disagrees with you!!
Thanks for the Inappropriate!! I guess it feels bad when the shoe is the other foot eh??
How come it's hateful and Racists and nasty when the dissenting opinion is to the right of the extreme left??
IMHO< this thread should be locked, it has NOTHING to do with Sports Photography!!
If you want to have a Photojournalists ONLY website, make one, let this be about Sports Photography!! |
