->> Has anyone replaced the superdrive on a MBP (previous non-unibody version)? If so, where did you get the drive from and how easy was it?
I've looked at a online video and it appears very simple. Suggestions on superdrive brands are much appreciated.
I've been having trouble with my MBP recognizing DVDs and CDs, whether blank or a movie or music. It would just spit them out. Now I can't the laptop to recognize anything. Spit everything out. I've tried several brands of media as well.
Thanks,
-stew
p.s. I searched the archives, and found many media related questions to having a drive spit out discs, but nothing about replacing a dead optical drive. |

->> I'd check the ones offered at OWC (macsales.com)
I've never bought a new superdrive, but all their other stuff I've gotten has been high quality (RAM, several different external drives, external enclosures etc). |

->> OWC is very good ... their offerings have pulled my fanny out of the fire on many occasions ... everything they sell is 100% on spec (or better) and compatible with Apple systems ...
They even have videos for hard drive, ram, optical drive, etc. replacement/upgrades and offer the proper tool sets that may be necessary for you to make the replacement yourself ... |

| ->> +1 on OWC, AKA MacSales. Excellent products and prices, and first rate customer service. I used one of their optical drives to replace the original SuperDrive on an old PowerBook years ago, a hard drive swap out on a PowerBook 12" last year a power converter and several OWC brand batteries. Better than OEM and less $$$ |

| ->> It's not hard to do but do it slowly and carefully because of the somewhat delicate ribbon connectors. |

->> Thanks all. I did see the ifixit website. It seems easy enough. Now I just need to order the optical drive. I've order a lot from OWC. I think their products are great.
Another site is powerbookmedic.com . They sell parts and show you how to repair as well.
The "Geniuses" at Apple store just stuck a blank CD into the drive and it spit it out. They did no other diagnosis. They want to charge $240 and it may take from 3-5 days to do. The money isn't a big deal, it's more about not having a laptop for the long. |
