Has Anyone Shot Elton John Lately?

->> He's coming to town and it would be nice to know if photographers have to shoot from the soundboard at the back or if they're allowed to shoot up-close-and-personal. I don't want to have someone haul a 400/2.8 around if it isn't needed.

Thanks.

->> jim, check and see where he recently played on the tour. then call or write the paper there. it worked for me at lady gaga and I was the only one with a 500mm....which you HAD to have since we were behind the soundboard. the other seven shooters had 50mm and a couple of 70-200's because they ASSUMED we would be in the pit.....I had called the two venues before she came to raleigh and knew what the deal was. good luck.

->> I covered him in April of last year. Two songs, one from front of stage, one from stairs leading up from floor level. Performed in a single pool of light, just him and the piano. If it's the same rules, might want to move before first song ends. Handlers made us move during break between songs, missing John interacting with fans, such as it was. From what I got and have seen from others, he's very good at looking directly into your lens. Shot w/28-70 from front, 70-200 from stairs. I had my 400 on hand, but it wasn't needed. Hope it hasn't changed too much.

->> I shot him last week (with Leon Russell) and we were up in the balcony (but it didn't look like we were high up)

Just put these up so you can see:

->> I covered him when he came to town in April or May and I had the same rules that Kevin got. Before the show and first song next to stage (wide angle and 70-200), and the second song was in the back along the half way down the court (where I used a 300.) The show was pretty nice, and there was a good amount to work with.

->> We had two songs right up front (no real pit). He played Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, so two songs ended up being more than enough time.

->> In Grand Rapids this April, we had one song, but it lasted 11 minutes. I was allowed to go anywhere except on stage. A 70-200 and 300 on full frame bodies worked for me.

->> We wanted to photograph Elton with Leon Russell for his show in Ontario Ca., but we were not allowed. Elton came on stage to introduce Leon and then left. We were able to shoot from in front of the stage although in an email we were told to bring long glass because we would be shooting from the sound board. I had a shot of Elton in the foreground and Leon in the background during the introduction, that's as good as it got. We shot Leon's first song and were ushered out of the arena. Then when Elton took the stage 5 songs later, we were ushered to the front of the stage for Elton. We were told that we were to shoot one song and then move back to a spot further back to shoot the second song. When the time came to shoot the second song, the PR person said to stay at the stage because there was no view of Elton from the second spot. People standing blocked the shot.
Just wish we could have been allowed to photograph Leon and Elton together.
