If it is running some, try starting while holding down the mouse button, that should force the DVD to eject. |

Could you repeat that in a way that's understandable? |

->> In some macs, the F12 Key will open the Drives
You can also use an external Optical Drive to install the OS or to put your OS Disk and run Disk Utility and find out what is jacked on your machine.
These are the times when Time Machine works great!!

->> If you can't get the DVD to eject by using the mouse button or left trackpad button, try this to manually eject the CD/DVD using firmware.
Restart the computer.
When you hear the startup sound, press and hold the Apple-Option-O-F keys.
Release the keys when you see a white welcome screen.
At the command prompt, type: eject cd
Press Return, then wait a few seconds. The disc drive should eject the disc, and OK appears on the screen once the disc is ejected.
To reboot normally
Type: mac-boot
Press Return |

->> "Apple-Option-O-F keys"
FYI, this doesn't work on Intel based Macs. "OF" is short for open firmware and Intel Macs are not based on open firmware. On an intel machine you need to open the terminal and enter the command "drutil tray eject 1". The terminal app is found inside the utilities folder. |

->> David,
Glad the mouse-key trick worked.
Folks, if you read the original post, the computer would not boot and he needed to erase and install the OS, so software options were not viable in this case. To do so he had to get the DVD tray open so he could start from the beginning.
The terminal and other software solutions will work on a computer that is running but the standard DVD open button is not working.
David, to avoid such problems in the future, you can create a bootable clone of your system that if the internal drive fails you can boot from the backup and get into the system to open the DVD and do an OS install. |
