Question About D700 and Raw vs JPEG

->> I tested this camera out today and took 2 images of the same person, same lighting/setting-one as a straight JPEG, the other as RAW at 3200 ASA. Can anyone explain why the RAW image is extremely noisy while the JPEG looks great? I opened both images using CS5 (for some reason, Capture NX2 didn't open the RAW)

->> What was the camera set to for "High ISO NR"?
This would have done in-camera noise reduction for the JPEG, but you will need to reduce the noise of the RAW in an image editor. |

->> Any initial impressions of the D7000 you care to share? Does it feel as solid as a D700 or D300?
You describe the ISO 3200 RAW file as extremely noisy, how does it compare to comparable 3200 files from a D3 or D700? |

->> Mike-I am not sure as it was a demo at the Photo Expo but I would tend to say everything was set as default right out of the camera.
Steve-first impression-very nice! I never used the D700 but the files seemed very close to my D3 and better than the d300 and the D90. Focusing was faster than the D90, close to my D3/s. Much easier to use than what I anticipated-I have heard people saying things were different but i didn't find that at all.
I don't know why I couldn't open the RAW file in NX2 but I am glad I have CS5. How would I reduce the noise? I have actually never done that.
I shot a few JPEGS at ASA 5000 and was very impressed as well

PS-the lenses used were:
the new 24-120 f4
70-300

->> I would think raw images will always have more noise as they are unprocessed files while jpegs have had noise reduction and other things done to the file.
The good thing is I have found is the raw file when processed properly will have less noise than the jpeg straight from the camera. |

->> Debra,
Did you download the Camera Raw plug-in for the D7000? I just took a look at the Adobe plug-in and it is a release candidate, not a final version. Maybe that's part of the problem.

->> Deb,
Capture NX2 2.2.6 is for the D7000
You will be surprised with the results that you will get with the Nikon software!!
