->> It depends on where your spot on the baseline is.

But generally for hand-held cameras a 24 - 70, 70 - 200 and 300mm (or 200-400) is the norm.

Remote cameras (if you're doing any) is varied depending on placement. A good overview on options for cameras and lenses can be found in these stories at the Sports Shooter Academy website on how SI covered the NBA Finals (YMMV obviously):

->> THANKS Jordan!

And thanks for the patience of those that have been checking out the Sports Shooter Academy website for the cool stories and videos there.

Jordan has been working hard to redesign and implement a lot of changes.

We have some cool things upcoming ... as well as news about the Lighting Luau and Sports Shooter Academy VIII.

Mahalo!

->> How to shoot depends on the look you want.

I shot the Rockets/Nuggets on Saturday night. I used a 300 2.8 and a 70-200 2.8 for pregame. For game action, I used the 24-70 on my 7D and the 300 2.8 on the 1D3. I wanted to focus on getting horizontal shots, so that is how I shot the game, though a lot of my horiz can be cropped to a much tighter vertical. When I shoot vertically, there generally isn't the room to crop horizontally for a feature, but when I shoot a little wider and horizontally, I can still crop in for the vert isos. But it is all preference. I will do a few different styles throughout the season based on the stories that are happening. This week, I wanted to focus on having lots of shots for Yao's return and Carmelo's probable trade.

->> Don't forget to bring some rubber lens hoods. Generally, for whatever reason, they only tend to require them during playoffs, but it can't hurt to throw a couple in your roller. I've heard of teams requiring them during regular season too, but it's rare. A cheap 77mm lens hood for both your 70-200 and one for your 24-70 are easy enough to pack, and then I tend to use one of those big pipe-fitting things on my 300mm but they're heavy and don't pack well. I just tie it up with the little monopod strap thing on my Think Tank roller.

Better to have them nearby and not need them, than to get to the arena and find out 10 minutes before tipoff that you have to run to a Home Depot to find something that'll work (a roll of garage weather stripping).

Also, a soft-bottom stadium seat is another thing you'll want to bring to save your back, and rear, if you're shooting from the court.

Oh, and if you're not used to covering NBA be sure to shoot through the action to better your chances of having the players' numbers in a frame. For some reason basketball jersey numbers always like to hide.
