Ball Heads for Remote Cameras?
Patrick Fallon, Student/Intern, Photographer

->> Hi Everyone,
Would appreciate suggestions for ball heads to be used for remote cameras, including but not limited to a floor plate remote and a backboard glass remote.

I was thinking this:

Thoughts? Suggestions?
Thanks,
Patrick

->> Patrick,

For a glass remote you will never be able to get the 1/4 20 thread tight enough into the bottom of the camera to make it safe and secure. Stick with variable friction magic arms for the glass.

And honestly, for a standard (horizontal) floor remote I'd keep it simple and use a four inch pocket wizard isolation bar or two AA cell batteries taped to the bottom of the camera. It's balanced, cheap, lightweight, simpler than having a plate and head.

But when we need them, the Gitzo Centre Ball Heads are what we use and I like them very much. They can be used off-center and still hold weight well, and the Novoflex Magicball line is pretty cool too but they're bulkier in my opinion, but maybe I've only seen they're larger models, I'm not sure of their entire line.

Good luck

Aloha
Jordan

->> Patrick,

I recommend the Manfrotto 410 geared head instead. It's far superior to any ball head. It works well with a floor plate and perfectly as a mount. Worth every penny.
