->> The mkIV needs different setting for each thing you shoot. What might work for football, doesnt always work for baseball, soccer, etc.

Try using PRM's settings for football:

->> Like David said you have different settings for different situations. The 1DMKIII has several sites that show what setting to use for different shooting situations, but I don't see anything for the 1DMKIV yet. You might find this site useful though, http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/controller?act=GetArticleAct&articleID=3246

->> I use PRM's settings with the exception of the auto focus drive speed. I have moved mine all the way to the fastest setting. My Mark III is set in the middle and was too jumpy trying to focus at faster settings. The Mark IV actually nails quick shots set all the way to the right. These settings are for football.

->> I will tell you that if you use video mode, there ARE settings you should keep in mind if you want it optimal:

1. The camera is optimized at ISO 160. Use full stops up from that, 320, 640, 1600 (there is no 1280!) THAT will yield less noice and won't reprocess the image as other ISOs do. 320 is actually less noise than 200!

2. Shutter speed at 1/50 for a pure film shutter speed no matter if your fps is at 30 or 24. If you go higher, you get that more staccato effect like "Saving Private Ryan"

3. Color space at sRGB. Since the prores .264 is made up of little jpegs, having it at Adobe 98 muddles the colors. Remember, you aren't printing a video!

4. And don't change lenses in video mode while the camera is on! Easy way to fry the sensor. Turn it off first. If you have moire or bad rolling shutter, its probably too late, those are the symptoms of a done in sensor.

5. On #2 above, to keep that shutter at the right space, get ND filters for your lenses.

That was really helpful, man. Thanks for the info.

PS -- +1 for using Miller's settings. I was totally lost when I got my MkIV, and luckily I thought to check SportsShooter. I've had good luck with his suggestions for pretty much all sports we cover.

->> Right out of the box, I would have to say the AF on the Mark IV is an improvement over the Mark III. I started with the settings suggested by PRM in his post but have found some other settings that suit my needs.
I use the rear button for focusing.
One problem that has persisted with both my cameras is when a subject steps in front of my main focus point. Especially a field sport with my 400. The camera snaps onto the nearer subject with such quickness, it startles me sometimes. I've changed CF III-2 to the slowest setting but it doesn't seem to be an obvious help. I thought I had a setting once that fixed that but...
I've also had the camera, on several occasions, lose focus while I'm fixed on a subject and continue to take OOF shots while I reflexively hold the focus button down for a short series. Maybe the focusing point slipped off the subject but to lose focus so fast? I use the center focusing point and have tried using surrounding points as well. Two occasions when the focus is lost quick as lightning.
Otherwise, when it's on, it's on and the files are great.

I think their is a CF that, if you are tracking say a running back, it will ignore anything that runs past in the foreground. If I can find it I will give ya a head's up. Haven't tried it myself yet...Dan.

->> As far as I know, the ISO settings I mentioned are for video because RAW fixes much of the ISO noise in the lower settings. Also, the settings are for ALL Canon cameras, at least as much as I have tested (haven't touched the Rebels or 60D) If you were to as Seth Resnick, he might say this holds true for Still, but I haven't noticed it so much myself.

This information of two years using HDSLR and Shane Hurlbut's workshop, a Hollywood DP who has jumped on making high production movies on 5 and 7Ds. If you haven't gone to his site yet, its a real eye-opener.

He and Tiffen just came out with a line of ND filters that are matt box 4x4 and 77mm screw mount that are water white glass, meaning they don't have impurities to cause color shift and they are designed specifically with sensors (AND IR filters on the sensors) in mind.

I believe what Dan it talking about is C.fn III-4

->> Danny, thanks for the comeback reply on the AF issue. C.fn III-4 may solve both issues I have now that I think of it. I"m going to try C. fn III - 4 on the "1" setting on my long lens camera and see what effect that has. The recommended setting was "2" if I remember well. I hope I get an opportunity this week to try it.

->> C fn. III -4 -1 seems to work at holding off rapid focus change if a subject moves in front of your main focus. I have another game this afternoon to try it again. I use a Mark III as a third body/ close focus camera for sidelines and end zone but I'll say it again, the Mark IV's focus and especially its files, are head and shoulders above the Mark III. News or sports. Just my opinion.
