Don't be an idiot like me...

->> I had a 24-70 brand new in box that I shipped off to Adorama Used to appraise to possibly sell. Got an email saying to call them. It took a few weeks due to the religious holiday, but they mentioned the value of the lens being somewhere in the $1400 range.
I thought "hey great, that is top dollar." a few minutes later, I received a credit to my card for a thousand dollars as opposed to the $1400 value. Because I didn't interpret things correctly, I hadn't picked up on 70% of the value of the lens comment stated by the customer rep. Stupid me.
In the hour or two that had past after trying to reach Adorama Used to possibly get the lens back due to the misunderstanding, it was already out the door headed of to a new owner, Damn they are efficient.
I wanted to share my tale and pass on the idea of not to get excited about big numbers and to listen carefully instead. Or you might lose out on some cash.
Or use the ss.com classifieds. ;)
Cheers. |

| ->> If you're talking about a Canon 24-70/2.8 they're selling new at B&H for around $1350 so getting $1000 on a second hand lens (and it was s/h, even if in great condition) is still pretty good. That's 74 percent of new. |

| ->> Adorama's buying policy is they give you one price as store credit, but if you want cash, then it is a percentage of that. |

->> Dan, I know when I sold some gear to them last year, I was told "we can do $x as a trade-in for store credit, but if you want cash, then it is x percent of that."
Not needing any new gear at the moment, I opted for the reduced amount in cash which I put towards purchase of something else. |

->> No worries. I've always been my own kind of idiot.
But like Jim said, that's not really a bad deal, and you don't have to mess with eBay, Paypal, extra shipping costs and all that. |

->> You sell to resellers to make a quick sale, not to get top dollar. That's really the mistake. Economics isn't magic. You'll never get as much from someone looking to make a resale profit than you would from someone who is the end user.
If you really want top dollar, it takes work - shrewd bargaining on ss.com or eBay (if you know what you're doing). |
