Need A Little Help Using The Beachtek DXA-SLR

->> Hey guys,
My colleague Sharon got a new Canon 5dMark II matched with a Beachtek DXA-SLR, Zacuta 3x finder and a Sennsheiser MKE-400 shot gun mic. (We also have Sennsheiser wireless) Anybody out there using a 5d Mark II or a Mark IV with this particular Beachtek? We are struggling with the set-up and could use a little help. If so, do you feel you need to max out the volume to be able to hear through your headphones? Also, when the levels are correct the lights should blink green - which they do. However, I noticed when I also attached the wireless mic to the right XLR input I wasn't getting green lights indicating proper levels. Is this normal? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks...Dan. |

->> On the bottom of the Beachtek, turn the high gain up for L-R channels.
My headphone volume is around 6-7 and it sounds good.
On the wireless transmitter, check the Sensitivity setting. I use -10dB to -20dB. On the wireless receiver, check the AF Out. I use -18dB to -24dB.
Leave phantom power (48V) off since the MKE-400 and wireless are self-powered.
If you use the MKE-400, the Aux In goes into the R channel on the Beachtek. Avoid using the Right XLR unless you want to mix the audio.
With the 5DMkII, download the firmware upgrade and you get manual audio controls. |

->> I recently spoke to Harry at Beachtek after having some issues with excessive hissing while using my Sennheiser G3 wireless lav mic, DXA-SLR and 5d Mark II. He recommended setting the manual audio levels at about 25 percent in the camera for best results with the Beachtek (the default is 50%). My transmitter and receiver are set in the range Myung notes above and the results have been much, much better by making this adjustment.
Though kind of obvious, you really have to keep a close eye on the life of your 9v. I've noticed unpredictable behavior from the adapter as the battery comes to an end, even before the low battery light comes on. When things don't seem quite right levels-wise, a new battery always brings it back up to top performance. |

| ->> Good point about the battery Mike. 3-5 hrs depending on whether it's alkaline or lithium, YMMV. |
