->> Hi -- planning to buy my wife an "eBook."
I've read a bunch of stuff on the web about this brand and that brand, but I was looking for some feedback from trust-worthy readers.
One of my main concerns is that eBooks will become VHS and Beta / HD-DVD and Bluray. There are so many formats and each device doesn't read them all and I don't want to be that BetaMax buyer in the end.
Thoughts and advice welcomed.

->> I started by borrowing a first generation Kindle from my in-laws. When I was ready to buy, I opted for the nook, being seduced by the color screen and "advanced" features it offered.
And I hated it. It was far too slow and had some bugs, and battery life was weak. Of course it was also a first generation device, but the old Kindle was still better. So I returned the nook and bought the second gen Kindle and have been really happy with it.
I still know folks who have gone for the nook because they like the sharing option (which Kindle doesn't have), but if that's not a big deal then I'd still opt for Kindle. Plus, those same nook owners are complaining that their books cost more than on Kindle.
At $140, at least it's not like investing in a four figure SLR body that'll be outdated next year. ;)

->> Love my kindle as well.
It's certainly a format war, but at the moment, the Kindle is tops. But as max said, it's $140. She'll love it. |

| ->> I do not own any of them (I hate trees and prefer to read text on their deceased carcasses), but my father loves his Kindle and a good friend prefers his Kindle to his iPad for reading. FWIW. |

->> why not buy an iPad and download the Kindle app?
I have a close friend who loves her Kindle, and she does read it outdoors. My sister-in-law and niece love their Nooks. It's one of those choices that you just buy it, and read the books you want to read. If you are trying to preserve the books for years come, but one made of paper. There is no way to know which of these formats is going to survive in the long run. |
