Nikon TC 1.4 II problem
Bryan Hulse, Photographer

->> Pulled out my 200mm f2 to shoot some college football on Saturday night hoping to use my 1.4 TC II (Nikon). Stadium was too dark for my 200-400, even at iso 6400.
But my 1.4 TC stopped working.

Normally, when you put a lens on the camera body, the aperture stays wide open so you can see thru the lens. When you press the shutter, it stops down to take the shot (if settings are stopped down). Or, you can push the DOF preview button.
But now when I put my 1.4 TC II on any lens, it acts like it is all the way stopped down, even when my D3 aperture setting is wide open (same result on other camera bodies).

So, I can see the subject thru the lens, but it is very dark (since it is being viewed stopped down). It allows me to take a photo, but the resulting image is obviously all the way stopped down, so it is also very dark.

Does anyone know how that sucker works or had this issue before? I’ve tried cleaning the contacts (although, I will try and clean them tonight with alcohol). Does that little leaver in the mount of the TC that slides back and forth have anything to do with passing aperture settings from the lens, back to the camera body?

->> Similar thing happened to me. The lever is the mechanical link between the camera and the aperture, and should move freely. On mine it was sticking, which prevented the aperture from opening up. I thought, "how complicated can this thing be" and opened it up to take a look. I only managed to make it worse, so the lever became completely stuck. Dropped it off at Midstate Camera Repair here in RI, and they fixed it for $40.

->> FYI, in case anyone else has this problem, I fixed it myself ...

I surfed around the 'net for a photo of the TC. This is what I found:
http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/nikon/nikkoresources/telecon...

That little tab that slides back and forth (shown in that photo) is what catches the aperture slide on the lens. When you screw in the lens/TC to the camera body, that lever slides and opens up the aperture.

Mine was bent back towards the screws. So, it wouldn't slide the aperture and was locked into position.

I took a small needle nose and bent it back to straight up. It was still sticking, although better. So, I actually bent it away from the screws a little more (past 90 degrees) and now it works great again!

Looks like I need the needle nose pliers in my photo kit from now on.
