->> ok-one minus already--their RAW file (NRW) will not open using photoshop 3 or 4.
Why does Nikon do this??? (does Canon?) |

Oh, to answer your question, because they can. |

->> I don't really like using the converter because it takes away some of the information.
For what it is worth, I also tested out the Canon G12 and photoshop CS4 also can't open RAW files. |

->> If you do not want to upgrade to a more current version on PS (the version you have also won't open D3s Raw files I believe) the P7000 comes with a disk with ViewNX 2 which will open the files.
While I think that all new equipment should be backward compatible with all software ever written, it really isn't practical.
Try ViewNX 2, it's not perfect but it's FREE!
(If you don't have the disk, it is a free download from Nikon.) |

Sounds like an "Ask Sport Shooter" column! |

->> the version of PS that I have (CS4) will open my D3S files.
I am not the most technical person and i downloaded the ViewNX2 that came with the P7000 but still can't seem to work on RAW images, and I can't save them as a JPEG.
One thing I hate is that when you upgrade to any new camera, all the older software is incompatible. At sometime I will get CS5 but I don't really need it now..or do I to open these files? (it would be the same if I returned this camera for the Canon G12) |

Cannot load file: IDSCN0025.NRW Invalid color format. The file format is not supported.
ARGHHHH

->> Here's the deal:
- Every new camera's raw format is incompatible with every raw reader when it's released.
- Manufacturers vary in the time it takes them to get an update out there, but they eventually will.
- Adobe was especially problematic as until recently their software updater did not update Camera Raw - you had to separately go and download a file and manually install it.
- Adobe also makes it so that newer versions of Camera Raw will no longer work with older versions of their products - to make you upgrade, of course.
- Nikon's message center will show updates for Capture NX2 and other products, but you have to install the latest one(s) to get the raw capability for the latest cameras.
- DNG converter is a workaround but due to the ongoing war between Adobe and Nikon, most Adobe products trash Nikon's maker notes in the EXIF, destroying quite a bit of useful information in the process (this, again, is intentional and done for competitive reasons). |
