->> Real estate photography
If you thought rates for freelance sports photography are bad, just try to get a decent rate out of a local realtor or home seller. For any houses $500,000 or below, typically they want to pay you a pittance - think $100 a house. There are so many fees in the mess that is real estate most sellers and realtors are not excited about adding another.
If you acquire the skills needed to light and shoot seven-figure properties you can make good money after you've built a good reputation, but that's about as rare as shooting high-end sports.
Even if you get that reputation, high end real estate photography has serious expenses. It really helps to shoot medium format, with all of the kit needed to do good in-camera perspective correction (software only gets you so far). You have to own a decent lighting and grip kit because doing interiors can be a bit tricky. Sure you can do HDR-ish bracketing tricks, but if you really want it to look right (which is what they expect at that level), you have to light it, and light it so it doesn't look like it's been lit.
Insurance is also a significant expense. You're walking into a multimillion dollar property decorated with high end furniture, finishes and collector-grade artwork. Unless you have $50,000 lying around to pay for that Chihuly your assistant smacked with a light stand, you need good insurance.
I really admire the guys who can make a living doing real estate photography. It's not easy, it takes years to develop the skills and reputation, but when they get there they get to do some really cool gigs. |

| ->> Real estate photography used to be one of my better income producers until the market flipped upside down. This year I've only had one job come from my local real estate market and it has nothing to do with the quality of work, but the economic realities of the market place. |
