14 Minutes of Action

->> Interesting interview on NPR's ATC today: a Wall Street Journal reporter broke down how much actual action happens in a baseball game. 14 minutes. More surprising was how much action took place in a football game: 11 minutes.

Here's the transcript:

->> This is pretty interesting. I actually did this a few years ago with Monday Night Football game.

Started the stopwatch at the snap of the ball and stopped it when the play was dead.

A typical play only takes 2-3 seconds.

The first 15 minute quarter took 45 minutes of real time. And in that entire 45 minutes there was only 2-1/2 minutes of actual football being played.

The rest of the time was replays, guys walking on and off the field, and beer and truck commercials. :)

I really don't understand how anybody can sit through an entire football game!

I'm sure it's not that bad for you guys who shoot it, but sitting at home watching on TV it's flat out the most boring sport I can think of.

Naw ... that would be baseball .... they have to warm up at least nine times per game ... :-) .. and the locations where probable action will take place are highly predictable ... football may not have many more "action" moments ... while you can prepare for where the action may occur ... it's much less predictable because you have 22 players involved on each and every play .... that's a lot of variables to consider ...

->> If you want to talk about long games with lots of break in the action, try watching a Red Sox-Yankees game. It was so bad, an umpire spouted off in interviews about how embarrassing the pace of play was in their games...

That's okay Steve. :)

Actually the wrecks are the worst part for me. Because following every one is a period of little action, unless I'm shooting pit stops.

->> Don't watch football... read a book while watching the Mariners crash again and only watch the action and replays of the action. Motorsports is much more interesting now that they can uut the viewer in the car and show the action from so many different viewpoints, but I only watch F1... and that can be very interesting. It is turning out to be a fascinating year in F1. I'm pulling for Weber to be champion.

Now volleyball and soccer, and I guess Rugby are all action sports.

->> To be fair to "true" baseball fans, I think they would say that the non-action parts of the game are a very important part of the game (batters stepping out of the box, pitcher stepping off the rubber, catcher visiting the mound, batter talking to 3rd base coach, pitching getting the signs from the catcher, etc.). These non-action parts of the game are what make baseball, baseball (for better or worse depending on who you talk to).

->> Landon - That's true of all sports involving strategy. Even NASCAR. All that time going around in circles involves a lot of strategizing about pit stops, drafting, etc. Not to mention trading paint and blocking and all that good stuff. Like most sports, you really have to understand and appreciate all of those things to be able to sit through an entire contest. So, it's not just baseball where 90% of the game is half mental. :-)

As for soccer and hockey...please. That's like watching a pinball machine. If you're attracted to shiny metal and randomly bouncing objects, yeah, those are your sports. Makes me dizzy. ;-)
