A bit OT: Cameras for kids

->> My five-year-old is really getting the photo bug lately, which I love.

What I don't love is watching her run around with my iPhone for hours at a time. I don't want to curb her enthusiasm, but I also don't want a broken phone.

I am thinking of buying her a toy camera for Christmas. I would like to get her something durable and fairly cheap, but something that takes actual photographs that we can download and save.

What say you, parents of SS? What is the hot kid camera this year?

Thanks.

->> Do you mean "toy" as in "pretend" or as in "kid's camera"? I'd go with a real one of some sort (sorry, no recommendations) so she can see what she shoots.

->> I just gave my 7-year-old my old canon g5. Still takes decent photos and probably is worth less money now than a camera made for a kid.

->> don't waste your money on a toy camera. the durable kids camera from fischer price for like $80 is only around 1.4mp. pick up a used point and shoot for the same price and get printable results. My 4-year old has been using the family p&s for over a year now. no problems yet, just explain that it is not actually a toy and how to use it. I have been hoping for months now that he will break it so i can get a new toy, but not to my luck. he takes very good care of it and the number of images of the dog's butt have significantly lowered after a little "training" session.

->> I bought my son a toy camera a while back and it was horrible. It was hard for him to hold and push the shutter button, the view screen was tiny and I hooked it up to 3 computers and could not get the images off.

So this year, he is now 4, I talked to Jody at Roberts who had some overstock of last-year's Nikon P&S models. He gave me a good deal on one when I was in Indy for the Final Four.

My son is pretty careful with things we tell him are breakable so the camera has held up and he's made some nice images with it. It's lasted six months now and no damage to it. This little camera has better specs on it than the digital P&S I bought when he was born.

So I recommend that approach. Go with a used or low-end regular P&S. You can find them pretty cheap, probably under $80. Then just plan on the philosophy that if it lasts more than 5 or 6 months without getting destroyed, then you have gotten your money's worth.

->> @Dave - yes, I did mean a functioning camera, but one that would be sold as a toy (i.e. Fischer Price)

After seeing the responses though, I will be looking into cheap/used P&S cameras instead.

Thanks everyone!

->> How about something like this

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/697041-REG/Vivitar_V5024_PINK_ViviCam...

for less than $40? It's available in multiple colors and takes SD cards. It looks like an okay starter camera for a five year old.

->> DO NOT BUY A FISHER PRICE CAMERA. Not yelling. Just trying to overemphasize :-). They are HORRIBLE. We bought one for our son, and to this day I kick myself in the rear. It was more than a joke.

I just stuck a 50 1.8 on my old D2H when I had it and let him shoot away. He loved it. Now that I don't have it anymore, when he wants to shoot I throw the 50 1.8 on the D2X and let him shoot away.
